Firstly I'd like to say thanks to everone for the amazing info on PL. I started getting bits together to build a projector 3 years ago but I had to shelve it due to lack of time. I'm less snowed under now, so dug out my laser stuff and spent the past couple of months designing the layout, buying missing parts and preparing the case. Pics below. Nothing is properly installed, just there to show the indicated layout. Just awaiting some mounts and I can start playing properly! I definitely wouldn't have got this far without lurking on PL for so long, but there are a few things I'm still unsure on. Any comments appreciated.. :)


I'm planning to use:

2x el cheapo 100mw 532nm modules PBS combined. These are actually giving out 150mw and 200mw.
2x 445nm, knife edged
4x 660nm quad (LPC-815), knife edge and PBS combined, which I'd like to fully or partially replace with 500mw 638nm if possible.
All powered by D4Ds, with mods for the 532 and 445. The 532nm TECs will be powered by the original PSUs
FB3 and DT40 Pros, as personally tweaked by Bill Benner!!
Sensible safety features, so all comments welcome.

I know there will be way too much blue but I intend to balance things by upgrading the existing greens or replacing them with a single 1W unit.

So, does anyone have experience of replacing C mounts with higher power versions? I have a broken (optics) 50mw 473nm, with a c mount that lases and gives way more power than my lasercheck can handle. I think it must be more powerful than what's in the 100mw heads as I understand 473s are really inneficient. If this is the correct, do you think it would be a useful upgrade for one of the greens?

Also, a while back I purchased a 2000mw 808nm C-mount with fast Axis Lens because I knew even less than I do now and thought it might be a good upgrade for the 473. I have only just considered that the fast axis lens might make it unsuitable for a DPSS though. Can anyone confirm?


My day job is R&D (electronics and software) so my general electronics is ok. I'm mainly concerned about optics e.g. aligning the new c mounts and potentially overdriving the crystals. Also whether any 808nm c mount will work.

Final question please is - am I likely to have problems combining the two greens? I have read posts about polarity, and turning these modules will not be easy.. Is there usually only a problem when trying to combine two different types of module?

As I've finished upgrading that cheap chinese RGV projector, here's my little review.
From the beginning, I wanted to have a budget solution to draw some good graphics in color, try to trace/draw/redraw/import images, frames, sequences, try myself in making animations and so on. To tell the truth, I didn't expect much from a 250$ RGV projector, I knew that lasers are not a cheap way of spending free time.
Anyway, I've ordered one PF-114 Projector from PF-Lighting, a pair of ScanLSP30k scanners, and the ISHOW (what a crap it is indeed:D)
The first thing I did after opening the package with projector - plug in the mamba dac (took one from the club for tests), draw a test pattern for ten seconds, shut the projector off, unscrew those default scanners and throw them away. Those galvos were, as I understand, around 10-12kpps, not the type I was looking for. After making a decent baseplate (I made it from, emm, well, I'll tell the story another time:p), I've dismantled the projector's case, leaving only its lower and back sides, where all the electronics were mounted. The projector's remains are still to be fixed on the baseplate, while ScanLSP drivers are already screwed to the left.Attachment 19210Attachment 19214

Also, just as santanas did, I've turned the platform with laser modules 90deg clockwise, getting rid of a corner bounce mirror. Less mirrors=more brightness.>:) Attachment 19211

Mounting galvos into the scanner block and onto the baseplate was easy, it took me about 10 minutes to mount and calibrate galvos to shoot the right direction.Attachment 19215Attachment 19216

To save some space, I've screwed the laser's DMX board on top of the ScanLSP PSU.Attachment 19213

Now the only thing I'm thinking of is what can be used as an enclosure for my first laser, coz on 31'st of october it'll be time for some drawing in the club. :-)Attachment 19212

Some "in action" pics, including test pattern scanned at 29500kpps an approx. 25deg angle. As soon as I figure out if my phone camera can shoot enough of red and green (those colors are there, believe me:D) - I'll post some other beam images and some complex animation frames.

Does anyone know a good source of extruded aluminium heatsink?

I could do with getting hold of a heatsink approximately 6" x 3" minimum to 8" x 4" maximum. Height of fins between 2" and 3".

I want to passively cool a coherent C315m for my holography setup so it must be quite thermally efficient as I don't want to use a fan. The top plate of the heatsink needs to be between 6 and 10mm thick so I can bolt the laser head directly on to it. I guess the more fins the better.

If anyone knows of a source that is reasonably priced. Or if anyone has anything laying around that may be suitable please PM me.
