URGENT - Projection Screen for SELEM 2011 - Feedback Please!!!

I'm looking for feedback regarding use of a front projection screen for SELEM next year, specifically what SIZE and what TYPE would the group prefer,...

I'm looking for feedback regarding use of a front projection screen for SELEM next year, specifically what SIZE and what TYPE would the group prefer, as listed below.

For anyone that is interested, Joann Fabrics has their blackout (drapery liner) material on sale for Labor Day (until weekend of 9/11/10). As I understand it, this is a popular choice for home theatre folks for projection screens. It looks like it would make a nice portable screen for indoor laser shows as well.

I am ordering some of this material (54" x ?# of yards), in pursuit of having a screen stitched together to hang between the scaffords next year at SELEM. I'd be interested in placing my 2W RGB in the balcony to allow for this, or we hang this at the back of the auditorium as an alternative?

Blackout Type I - thin, light material that will allow for images to be seen from the rear as well.
Blackout Type II - heavier material that does not pass any light (green laser pointer direct on material was not visible from the other side).

It's on sale at $3.00 a yard. I will get this stitched together once the size and type are determined, but I need to confirm this in the next couple of days. I may opt for the lighter material, in support of front/rear option and also being lighter to hang.

I'm being told this material goes on sale 1-2 times a year, so I'm wanting to get this purchased now.

12' x 12'? Bigger? Please let me know your thoughts. *retardo

Thanks,
Greg

The plasma tube is missing but everything else is there. Wood structure looks like walnut to me, There are two pins on the back side of the central support that apparently held a spring to support the bottom of the plasma tube against the two adjusting screws above. Ignition coil!:giggle:

I got the instruction manual with the laser. Here's the page showing the plasma tube, the only one I've seen without a reservoir tank! I guess they considered the "sidearm tube" adequate. The mirrors were apparently on the ends of the tube, which was held in position on both ends and pushed into alignment with the adjustment screws. This is the second laser I've come across that used tube bending to adjust the mirrors.

Hi,
About two years ago someone was selling a pile of small CO2 lasers as complete and tested/tuned units:

I missed out on the sale but managed to pick one up around a year ago intending to use it in a laser cutter for paper. I never got around to completing that project and have come back to find almost all information on how to power these units is gone.

From what I remember these units required only 30V/~10A on the red/black wires, but they might have also needed 12V on the orange line (as a PWM input?). This is a complete unit that has already been wired up so I mainly need to know how much and where to apply power.

Thanks,

Hello all

Due to many enquiries over impedance issues and running several lasers off one input within the projector Dan and I have come up with a slight revision of MatIlda to serve this application.
This revision we have named Buffy, its a single MatIlda board with one set of buffers - six channels of diff buffering - 12 buffers in all, and is powered by an on board dc-dc convertor allowing Buffy to be powered from one of your 5V supplies in the projector. There are no external connectors and the holes for the Db-25s can be used as mounting holes with all connections being soldered to the pads on the pcb. We are keeping this the same price as all other versions for consistency and we will be making some over this weekend for them to appear on the MatIlda buy page (here http://danielbriggs.co.uk/laser/matilda/) on Monday.

Now to pre-empt the inevitable question about why dont we power all MatIldas off a nice n easy 5V supply - why do we use an ac supply instead - the answer is simple. MatIlda is designed to be modular and powering off a 2W dc-dc convertor would only allow one input and one output board as the upper limit - not very flexible! As MatIlda was intended to be an external device and requires a split rail supply for the op amps we thought a single ac supply was better to acheive this than 2x wall warts or having to add a more complicated internal psu which we didnt have space for.

I hope this helps people to eradicate some of them impedance blues. Long live Buffy!

What do you guys think?

I have connected my QM2000 via the 1/4inch with resistor mod per documents on pangolins web site. (using only pins 1(X) and 2(Y) and ground) This becomes single ended this way. The problem I am experiencing is the Y input to the ADAT is down in signal. To the point where I set the X axis to 62 and Y to 100 to have proper size. I have proved it isn't the ADAT as if I swap the X Y channel inputs the problem follows Y. I have ohmed out and even changed the resistors in the cable that was made even though they were correct same problem. I have now shared the exact same ground point for the signal single ended for X and Y same problem. It acts like the Y drive doesn't have enough output when terminated with the ADAT. To the projector it is just fine no problems.

I am thinking I'll just change reduce the resistance inline till I get equal balance, but would really like to know what is going on.

The picture EE through the ADAT or layed off to tape looks just fine no other issues except the reduced Y output.

Ideas?

EDIT: wow butchered that title not sure how that happened thought I went from QM2000 2 ADAT, to QM2000 ADAT connections. Left some crap behind sorry it is a QM2000 not the ultra secret advanced 20002.

OK….Pics of my “ 445 Test Setup “…. The setup was put together to experiment with Cylindrical lenses and Anamorphic prism sets ( One and Two sets)….and to monitor heat sink temps. I went with a somewhat oversized Copper heatsink….58mm long by 53mm tall by 32mm wide. The heatsink has a small 12VDC computer fan/aluminum radiator fins mounted on the side of the Copper block…to pull more heat away. The driver is a DIE4Driver v 1.2. I have the new FlexModP3 that I will try in the near future. The diode is a A140 from Daguin. As measured on a Laserbee II….output is set at 1.2 mW with 1130mA input @ 6VDC to the driver.
After over 4hr of CW….the temp levels out at 25.9C ( 78.6F)…..never higher at the current settings The temp probe is located perpendicular to the Axis 12/25 module holder...inserted into the Copper block with thermal transfer paste….directly below where the LD is positioned. The fan is only being supplied 6VDC…as is the temp unit. I would say that…for me….a little Copper….and a little fan action are all you need to keep this diode happy. Maybe for holography….more output stability is demanded in nm and mW….but for projector use….mmmm….why TE ????...KISS !!!
The arrangement in front is for my optics experiments. I have not tried the Cylindrical lenses yet….waiting on Dr. Lava fine work…..But…in the mean time…I had to do some “ tinkering”….NOTHING as completely stunning as Simons works of Machine art…..His work is beautiful !!!!!!!....
The next step might be to integrate the very nice diode holders from Dave @ LSP into some type of Copper slab/fan arrangement…..I am sure the works in progress from Dr. Lava and Dave/Simon will be a huge improvement over my setup….but…I wanted to do some experiments for myself….and see if TE was necessary.
Optics wise….I have just started to experiment…more results later.
OH…and BTW…Copper is a real PITA to do any type of machining to !!!

Hello,

I bought 2 Laserworld ES-100g , it was in January , thier price was around 250€ piece.
They should give 100mg green, 10k scan, no ilda input only dmx.

I have decided to go for dmx, since I did not need to make pictures on wall, I was happy with built in patterns.

I am Dj, so I am not really into lasers, I just bought this lasers to use them in gigs at school in smaller rooms , they looked so nice.

However , one of lasers output power lowered like twicely and its not that bright like it was before. I contacted seller ,but he replied that I should contact laserworld directly because he is not reponsible for it etc. I contacted laserworld , they told me that it was cause by bad using and I can send them laser back and they will repair ti for me for like 150eur+shiping fees... (lol thats actual price of this laser)....

So after that I decided to do some research on google to find out if I can repair it by myself. And i found out this forum.

So i am thinking that laser case and galvos are still pretty good too, so I wanna ask if it is possible to remove old failing green laser diode and replace it with new one or better with new red diode , that I would buy off ebay or some pretty trusted page that sells high quality lasers. Since I am not very into building lasers etc. (Never done this) so I wanna ask if its hard ( maybe I can achieve it with litle help from you).

And also another question if you know any supplier of good quality laser diods, but they should not costs too much. I was looking into kvant , becuase I live in same country. But they costs pretty much for me.

And last question , becuase I heard of analog modulation and TTL modulation. How do I know which one is built in my laser? and I think that I should go for analog modulated diodes , because I can use them in rgb projector later if I try to build or uprage it later.

Sorry for my nubish questions but its really hard to find some guides on forum.

Hi,

Firstly I'd like to say thanks to everone for the amazing info on PL. I started getting bits together to build a projector 3 years ago but I had to shelve it due to lack of time. I'm less snowed under now, so dug out my laser stuff and spent the past couple of months designing the layout, buying missing parts and preparing the case. Pics below. Nothing is properly installed, just there to show the indicated layout. Just awaiting some mounts and I can start playing properly! I definitely wouldn't have got this far without lurking on PL for so long, but there are a few things I'm still unsure on. Any comments appreciated.. :)

I'm planning to use:

2x el cheapo 100mw 532nm modules PBS combined. These are actually giving out 150mw and 200mw.
2x 445nm, knife edged
4x 660nm quad (LPC-815), knife edge and PBS combined, which I'd like to fully or partially replace with 500mw 638nm if possible.
All powered by D4Ds, with mods for the 532 and 445. The 532nm TECs will be powered by the original PSUs
FB3 and DT40 Pros, as personally tweaked by Bill Benner!!
Sensible safety features, so all comments welcome.

I know there will be way too much blue but I intend to balance things by upgrading the existing greens or replacing them with a single 1W unit.

So, does anyone have experience of replacing C mounts with higher power versions? I have a broken (optics) 50mw 473nm, with a c mount that lases and gives way more power than my lasercheck can handle. I think it must be more powerful than what's in the 100mw heads as I understand 473s are really inneficient. If this is the correct, do you think it would be a useful upgrade for one of the greens?

Also, a while back I purchased a 2000mw 808nm C-mount with fast Axis Lens because I knew even less than I do now and thought it might be a good upgrade for the 473. I have only just considered that the fast axis lens might make it unsuitable for a DPSS though. Can anyone confirm?

My day job is R&D (electronics and software) so my general electronics is ok. I'm mainly concerned about optics e.g. aligning the new c mounts and potentially overdriving the crystals. Also whether any 808nm c mount will work.

Final question please is - am I likely to have problems combining the two greens? I have read posts about polarity, and turning these modules will not be easy.. Is there usually only a problem when trying to combine two different types of module?

Sorry for all the noob questions.. I have found answers to many other questions by trawling PL, just not those above.

Many thanks in advance, Dan. :)

Hi guys;
I have a 445nm diode laser that I just finished tonight and I seem to be having a power and cooling problem. I bought the case pictured below that was for 445nm diodes. I can't seem to get to get the power @ 1.2 amp that I should. The ps unit was designed for the 445nm diodes. I also am having a dimming if run too long. I guess this case doesn't cool well enough. Also what cases are you guys using for these diodes?
I have not run this thing very long as it is right now. Also the beam doesn't output a round beam but a oblong beam. I am using a glass lens but not the one that came with the diode. Could that be the problem ?
Thanks

Hi everyone! I just started my Sophomore year of college, lots of work of course. I thought I would share this website with you guys because if your like me and can't afford nice new electronics, but have a little time to spare, this is for you. So before I tell you about the website, here is how I stumbled upon it. My xbox 360 died this summer, and I'm trying to get a new one (unfortunately I'm a broke student). Thanks to a cool website that a friend told me about, I can get one for "free," with some help from you guys. The website works like this. You go to my link, and register, they only need your email address and you create a password, they dont ask for any personal information, thats it. You then go to a page of offers and pick one to complete. The saying "nothing is free" is true here, however you can get $50-2000 products super cheap by doing this and it's easy. All the offers cost $12.50, but thats all the money you spend, throughout the entire process. THERE ARE 3 free offers, but you usually have to create a website or something and then cancel the subscription after a month otherwise they bill you for a months subscription, its free, but a little more work and time. Once you do this you have one more step and then they mail you whatever gift you selected for free! The last step is called referrals, thats what I'm doing now. You get people to sign up and complete an offer. Once they do, you get one referral. The more expensive the gift you picked, the more referrals you need. The xbox 360 slim for example, (299.99) at walmart, requires 10 referrals. So if 10 people (YOU) go and decide you can spend 12 dollars for an other wise $50-2000 gift (yes they have everything from itunes giftcards to macbook pros and other electronics), then you can help me and yourself at the same time. The website may sound sketchy at first, but if you consider the amount of referrals the big Offer companies get, they can easily afford to send out free gifts in exchange for potential customers. This is an advertising tool that makes them lots of money, we just get to take advantage of it! This type of marketing (chain marketing) has been done before via mail services successfully, this is just the first time they have done it on the web. Plenty of reviews on google proving they are legitimate and have a perfect record. I would really really appreciate it if you guys help me. It will only take a couple minutes of your time. Not only will you be helping me but yourself as well. It's not "free" because it requires a little time, but if you have a few minutes it's totally worth it. A little work goes a long way in this case :)

HERE is my LINK :
http://gifts.freebiejeebies.co.uk/281783

It has to be this link otherwise I don't get a referral credit. Thanks A ton guys, it means a lot to me ( a broke college student )!

Feel free to read up on, and check out the site, it's definitely legitimate and very cool.

Somehow awhile ago I was trying to get LivePro to project into a small area. If I remember correctly, there was some setting in Showtime / Zones to output zones 2-4 into zone 1. That way I had all my beams going where I wanted them. Worked good....then.

Now when I go to play one of the pre-made shows the graphics / beams are all mucked up. They used to play perfect before I screwed up. I have looked everywhere trying to find how to put things back like they were before and no luck. I can't even find how I made the changes the first time. My CRS is getting worse I think.

I have replaced the LD2000.ini file with an original I had backed up and even that didn't work. Anyone have an idea of wtf I did and how to fix it? I suppose I could delete everything and start over, but except for the zones I have everything how I like it.
I will not be making money with this unit and it only is for recreational usage I'm a student and will use this for my theater class (school has laser).
I am ok with used, consignment, or whatever way Quickshow will work.
I find the retail price prohibitive and phoenix, mamba, and mocha are so much less in price.

EDIT- more of the review. This labby is very light weight less than 200grams
the heatsink is only 50X30X33 mms the driver is in a plastic case that is only slightly larger.
the lens can be focused but you need to remove the ring at the front.
As it came to me the focus was a dot of 6.7 mm at 8 feet but started to elongate into a bar at 21feet)17 mm and at 32 feet the bar was 21mm. all these measurenments were taken at 350Mws.

Only real con I have is the blanking- while a flexmod could be used it would be nice if this one just came with analogue modulation- its being looked into.

I heard tonite that the first shipment of 25 units will be available soon.

the first and thrid photos below are of the laser at 32 feet- the second is at 8 feet and the forth is at 21 feet.

Hi all,
I have just spotted that surplusshed have brand new CTI 3200-142 AOM crystals including bragg mounts for $14ea!

This raises two obvious questions:

1) Does anyone know what the RF parameters are so a driver can be cooked up.

2) These are specified as being coated for 442-488nm, does anyone know how far outside that range it will be possible to go before losses rise unacceptably? Is there any chance that 532 might still work for example?

edit: http://www.crystaltechnology.com/pro...odulators.html

Summary:
For the - 141 (The - 142 is not listed).
RF is 200Mhz at up to about a watt.
Active area is a bit on the small side so some optics in and out will be required, still no idea if they will work at 532, going to have to experiment. Pity they are not 3080's.
Quoted efficiency is not particularly great, 80% if you can get a 100um beam waist....

Regards, Dan.

Just spotted that www.surplusshed.com have brand new, never used CTI AOM crystals (Model 3200-142) including bragg mounts for :o:o:o $14 each :o:o:o...
They are apparently coated for down the blue end of the spectrum (442 - 488), but it would be interesting to see how far they can be run outside that before the losses become unacceptable.

An RF driver will have to be devised (got to figure out the frequency first, possibly 32MHz?? Anyone have a network analyser?), but if these could be talked into doing say 532nm the possibilities become interesting.....

Thought some of the gas heads might be interested (For the mount if nothing else).

Regards, Dan.

I had these for sale previously but the buyer was not happy about the scanner amp mounting plates being pre-drilled out so I refunded him and they are now available again.
These were purchased from DZ in October 2009 so they have 13 months warranty left on them. They were installed in a projector that was used for 2 shows, approx 4-5 hours of total usage. The rest of the time they have been sitting on a shelf.
The scanners work absolutely fine and there is nothing wrong with them at all. They are tuned to 30K.
$400.00 + $20.00 for insured UPS shipping to the USA.
