Unhappy Mirror came off of my Cambridge HP 6800 scanner...HELP!

Well CRAP! Went out to my garage, fired up my laser, and found that my Y mirror on my Cambridge 6800HP mirror came off the shaft of my scanner, What is the best way to put it back on? Epoxy? Gorilla glue? HELP!

I don't know about the best way, but I've fixed 3 broken galvo mirrors by putting a drop of epoxy on the shaft, carefully attaching the mirror and letting it cure with the mirror hanging straight down from the galvo (shaft in a vertical position that is). It might not be optimal, but has worked every time for me. You just have to center it very carefully. The epoxy needs to cure slightly before it is possible to get the mirror to stick.

2-part, fast-drying epoxy works very well. Just be sure it's centered. Tocket's idea to suspend it vertically is unique - I've never heard of that before - but it sounds like a good idea provided you can keep the mirror from falling off while the glue dries.

No! You've got to use just a tiny amount of epoxy or you will have a beast of a time 'balancing' the tuning - I have a pair of the coolest mirror-setting jigs, I bought from Laser Images - I see you are in Cali - where? I'm in Van Nuys - I am sure, (either you stop on by, or via USPS) I can fix you up right-quick, and proper...

I Live in Nor Cal, Okay... here is the prognosis the mirror has been damaged, Looks like the scan head protector I made fell of, and broke my Y mirror….. IRONY!!

Do you think I could flip the mirror over?, or would this cause loss of scan angle, and or balancing issues? Should I just contact Cambridge, and buy a new mirror? Also do I have to send the amp if I have Cambridge replace, or do I have to re-tune after I replace the mirror?

Ah yes, those little ironies in life - ya gotta love em... BTW - nice job on your box, there - good to see someone use some good, 'old-fashioned' hardcore-mounts / tableware, instead of flat-head screws and duct-tape...

RE: mirror flip, well in an 'emergency', sure, but my advice is: fix it 'right' - again, I can do this for you in a snap, for the cost of postage, and if you're comfortable re-tuning your amps, that will certainly be easier than sending me the whole block / amps... I would not send it to Cambridge - that's like using a stick of dynamite to swat a fly if you don't trust me to handle it, that's cool, but I'd sooner recommend One Stop Laser Shop than Cambridge... why go thru that expense and wait, dude?

But I can assure you, I am quite capable of replacing the mirror - again, for the cost of postage...we've got plenty of Y mirrors here... but if you decide to go CT, cool, no offense taken.

    Lemme know...

Yeah, prolly.. before I get myself in 'too-deep', here lemme check, tomorrow (well, today... ) and see how many Y's we've got - we have quite a few pairs of 6800s, with bad coils, etc, but fine mirrors, that can-be 'harvested' for others...

Can you do your own 'glue-up' if I just sent you a mirror?

PM-me you email, so we can 'chat' outside of PL, cool?

    cheers..

I've done my share of mirror replacements. I recently replaced the mirroron my 6800. I got the mirrors from DZ. He's closed up shop now, but Marc (gottaluvlasers) of CT lasers was distributing DT scanners, which use the same mirrors. Give him a shout.

As far as adhesive, I use 3M's 2216 (2 part adhesive). It is what we use for optics bonding at work. The retail equivalent is called JB Weld available at most hardware stores. The most important thing is to get the mirror straight. No jig is needed if you take your time to line it up. Check on it as the glue dries. It's always a good idea to retune your scanners to the new mirror, but in a pinch not required if the mirror is the same size.

    Hey dsli_jon,
Yeah I'm intrested If you could help me out, I do not think I would have too much of an issue to change it out, I cleaned the groove allready so it is ready for a new mirror. I like your jig setup! If I send my galvo to you could you replace the mirror? send me a PM with info and cost.

    Thanks!

    Jason
