This year was awesome as usual; we are still a bit disorginaized but overall we had less problems than we normally do even though it took longer than it should to get set up.

As always THANK YOU Adam for leading this event; need more delagation. with us having more attendees than the upcoming ILDA convention we might want to start looking at how they arrange that event.

I won't go into a whole thank you list; too many to thank, but thank you to everyone who showed up and participated in the lil event... Especially those that drove long distances.

Ok, a few specifics...

Really glad that everyone had such a great time. It was a lot of work, but it sure was worth it to see those awesome beams in the auditorium. Too many people to thank, but I gotta try anyway:

Jeff, the scaffold and power arrangements are perfect. You're in charge of those from now on! Really great job buddy.

Chris, the name tags were perfect! Like Jeff, you're stuck with that job now!

DZ, I could not have done this without you. The shirts were the best yet, and you did so many other things during the event that I don't know even where to start to thank you. You're the best...

Casey, your presentation was awesome, and the informal chats you had with members at the hotel were priceless. You are no doubt one of the best things to happen at SELEM in a long time. Sure hope you can make it again next year.

Bill Benner, once again an incredible demo of up-coming Pangolin products. Can't wait to see Quickshow running *simultaneously* on both FB3's and QM-2000's on the same system. (Yeah, for those of you that missed it, this is a confirmed fact! It will happen!)

Dan and Adam from X-laser, really enjoyed talking tech with you guys, and wished we had more time together. Dan, remind me to never play poker with you for money! You've got real skills with cards, and the impromptu magic demo at the hotel was enjoyable as hell.

DSLI-Jon, thanks for bringing the Lasarium shows! Many of us had never seen them, so that was a real treat! Wish we had time for more stuff. (Next year!)

Doug, Mystrys, and Len, you all put on one hell of a good feed! The BBQ was perfect, and the potato salad and baked beans were fantastic. We're going to need to get you folks some more help if this gets any bigger though. Also, a big thanks to Randy's wife Sharon for the 20-dozen (!) cookies she baked for the event.

Thanks to Aaron, Newlin, Frank, and the 5 or 6 other folks who worked very hard to solve our networking issues. Next year I think we'll have a plan set up ahead of time that should help.

A big round of thanks to everyone who donated door prizes this year. Initially it was looking a little thin, but several PL members stepped up to the plate to help out, so in the end we had more door prizes this year than ever before.

Speaking of "more than ever before", the official attendee count for SELEM 2010 is in excess of 70 people. That's a large number, people. It's more people that they will have at the ILDA conference this year. (Not bad for a bunch of hobbyists, eh?)

So in honor of that record attendance, let me thank each and every one of you who attended. *YOU* are the one's that make SELEM happen. All I do is book the venue. But if I'm the only one that shows up, SELEM would be a bust! It takes a bunch of other people who are willing to pack up their gear and schlepp it all across the country to set it up in a little auditorium in Newton to really make SELEM an event worth attending. So thanks to everyone that made the trip. SELEM would not have been the same without your participation.

For me, this whirlwind began only a few short months ago and within that time, I've aquired three RGB systems, a 250 mW green, two software packages (LD2000 AND Moncha 2.1) BOTH with laptops, joined an online forum of people who are still speaking a lot of Greek, and took a leap of faith to drive 1,000 roundtrip miles, explaining to work and family that I was going to attend some event in the sticks of N.C. that people can't even agree how to pronounce. (There's a 12-Step program for this in the end, right??)

I arrived late Saturday night after a long day at work, an even longer drive and, after checking into the hotel, with a certain amount of trepidation, made my way to Newton to find this theater. After some assistance in direction from the local police, I arrived and the first thing I encountered on the front steps was moderately intoxicated revelers who were just barely able to slur out that Adam was the person I needed to find and get checked in. I was directed into a room filled with fog, wires, laptops and monitors scattered everywhere and in the back of my mind thinking, "What the heck have I gotten myself into?" I'm not the type of person who easily walks up to people and begin conversation to begin with (although public speaking to large groups and "running the show" comes very naturally) and immediately knew I was far, far out of my element. "These are REAL laser people." (Hell, I didn't even know what's inside the case.) Retreating to the safety of the dark theater, what struck me next was that after a month of online counseling about the dangers of laser light, I (along with everybody else) was being hit with beams. (Must be an enthusiast thing, I thought.)

After getting back to the hotel, I tried valiently to stay awake and engaged in the conference room but it was a losing battle. THIS was the place I was finally gonna get some questions answered and, although I'm a night owl, I just couldn't do it.

The next day brought about a little more of the same. I figured if I got there early, I could start trying to actually meet people. 9:15 a.m. found me sitting in the parking lot and the front door was locked. Nearly an hour later, is when I discovered the fact that everyone was actually already inside, having come through the stage door. Duh. (God... I'm such a newbie to this.) As the morning slowly dragged into afternoon with everyone seemingly absorbed in getting these shows running, I finally went out for lunch and upon coming back, decided that, "Your only going to get out of it what you put in it." Finally I approached Marc from CT Lasers about some goggles I was going to buy and within a few short minutes, the magic began to happen. We got to working on an alignment I needed taken care of and gradually began meeting more people and was dissappointed at how quickly 5 p.m. rolled around. The rest of the event was a blur and by the time I HAD to leave on Monday night, Casey was still going strong and I could have easily stayed a few more hours. The idea of arriving home at 5 in the morning and heading right to work was the only thing that moved me out of my chair.

All in all, it was a fantastic event and for uninitiated people reading this, you only have to attend SELEM once to fully understand why this has become the premier enthusiest meeting in the country and why attendence surpasses something as big as the ILDA cruise. This is a great bunch of people who seem patient enough to help the new people and knowledgable enough to affect the future of the hobby as a whole. Many thanks to Marc, Dan and Adam from X-Laser, Bill Benner from Pangolin, Casey Stack, Mixed Gas, Blowfly, and the ones who don't even realize how much I learned from them like Flecom, Allthatwhichis, Mark from my stomping grounds of Delaware (who I expect to see throughout the year); those whose screen names I'm forgetting and of course, Adam Buffo. I am looking to be much more involved in my "sophmore year" (including perhaps bringing the sound system) and if you told me it was next week, I'd be packing the car already. As soon as we know a date let me know!! I'll need to likely jump through some hoops with work but, have learned the big advantage of getting there early and being rested.

PS - I've read this thread a number of times throughout its creation. Quite frankly, as I read Beamann's comments, it really drives home an even more important aspect of last weekend. My son's mother is legally blind as well and I can't fathom the thought of what that must be like. And, if a bunch of self admitted geeks can get together and in the process of sharing their love of light, food, and uh, hops, can give the gift of an amazing colored memory to a visually impaired person, that's a pretty special thing too.

After being able to actually see some kick ass shows...I soooooo have the bug!! I was inspired by all the hard work and creativity....I would love to have something to show next year. Now, if I can only get Doug to finish his current project.... I could get to work It would be WAY more fun geeking out on some shows than in the kitchen..might have to find some more help so I can play. On that note..Thank you Len!!!

That aint no SP-168...that right there is a SP-165 the worlds greatest small frame glass gas laser. and the tube looks excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love that laser!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you guys check the quartz rods....they are probably good anyway...it looks in real nice condition. Dont EVER get rid of that laser.

SELEM 2010 was a spectacle. All SELEMs seem to end up that way. Like Stuka mentioned in another thread, we should try to hone down our purpose a little and I think a little more organization (by people other than Atlas -I mean Buffo) would help out a lot.

We'll figure it out. One thing I'm going to work on is getting at least a little more sleep. Every year I go to this event, I end up wrecked by the end of it all due to lack of sleep. It's fun, but I think I'd get much more out of it if I wasn't completely sleep-deprived (and hung over )

I met a lot of cool people this year. I think we could handle larger numbers next year, but we'll have to get creative.

This was my first SELEM. Thank everyone for their hard work. I enjoyed it, asked lots of stupid questions and learned a great deal about projectors specifically.

Truly makes me want to build a projector myself. Now to just come up with a plan.

I also really enjoyed seeing the Krypton and Argon projector from MattDJ. Beautiful. Also seeing mixedgas and sam work their magic.

I have dealt with a few people in the past from other places, so it was nice to put a face to some of them and have a chance to meet more of the members here.

Look forward to continuing to learn and also again, I appreciate the help and information.
