One thing I found while working under windows 7 (and vista as well presumably) is that when the windows firewall message box pops up (asking you to add an exception to the windows firewall), I had to give it access to all networks (not just home or private) because the wired eithernet port was classified as a public network. The exact details depend on your exact setup, but if you are not sure it should be otherwise just allow it access to all networks.

Otherwise everything has been working great!

So, what next? Here's my plan:

    Firmware/Driver 0.4:
    - Improved performance: 100kpps streaming over Ethernet, 50kpps ILDA playback, 32kpps WAV playback
    - DMX I/O with an add-on board. I'm working on the board now; it'll be available with a few different options (3-pin or 5-pin XLR connectors, isolated or non-isolated) and cost something in the $25-$60 range depending on configuration. XLR5 connectors are expensive! It's very simple, and I'll also post schematics for DIY.

    Firmware 0.5
    - Firmware 0.5 will support the "companion board" that I'm starting to think about now. This'll be an add-on board with an assortment of features for controlling a projector - TEC control, diode drivers, TTL I/O for shutters, interlock switches, etc, and maybe ILDA input. Of course it'll have breakout connectors to connect to the galvo drivers and such.

Are there other new features that folks would like to see? Other hardware add-ons? More control options? I'd appreciate any suggestions people have.

    A few MIDI ports?
Does it make me a nerd when I go to a party with my laptop?

not a "companion board" but an idea to put out there. if etherdream can send a list of files on the sd card say to a poe connected arduino, a simple 4-5 button interface with an lcd display would be cool and cheap. the arduino can just send the osc commands for stop/play and other cues. Could also be used as a standalone display for TEC and Diode power info.

Yeah, there are a few ways to do the local control interface thing. Another option I was thinking of was a MIDI-over-USB link to a directly connected iPad, allowing control with no network at all. A little LCD-and-buttons board that could be built into a projector would be interesting...

One more vote for SD Card support of ILDA plus LaserBoy WAV file playback would be nice.

It already has SD card and WAV playback support. J4cbo can correct me if I am not.

I believe sitter is only program for diagnostics but there have been som tests with etherdream and lsx in vmware?

it should work in vmware as shown http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eavJmCrP4pk but i observe you already asked in there too

8 TTL outputs for beamtable. DMX in , ie DMX can select frames or animations from the SD card.
Better wav support, I am sending you a CD with wavs to test from.

Would be nice to have 10 slow 10 or 12 bit analog inputs that LSX could read.

maybe a way to scan a cheap 8x8 button array?

    Hi,

I recently bought the board but have some big troubles with it. The automatic IP from range 169.254.x.x is obtained successfully but it never retrieves an IP via DHCP. More than this, my router does not detect any incoming DHCP request from the board.

I tried the latest firmware from GIT (which for some reason still is named 0.3.0) but same here, DHCP is not working.

    Any ideas?

That's odd. Can you try hooking it up straight to your machine and see if you see DHCP requests with Wireshark?

What router / DHCP server are you using?

I'd forgotten to push to github for a while; it now has v0.4.1, which is the latest, but there haven't been any core networking changes recently so I wouldn't expect new firmware to make a difference.

How can I do that? the board is connected to my network while Wireshark is running locally on only one machine!?

I tried using a old Siemens Gigaset and a brand new D-Link

If you connect the etherdream direct to your computer via cat5 with wireshark running when you power the etherdream you should see in wireshark the dhcp request. If that is not happening you might have trouble with the board. Still might not hurt to get current with the updated git firmware now as well.

Hmmm, OK, I'm not familar with Wireshark - how does that DHCP request look like?

The internet can show you what a DHCP request looks like in wireshark. And just to check when you plug etherdream into the network and power it on you have it unplugged from USB? (not sure it matters have not tested)

Info on what to look for and how to filter the traffic (makes life much easier) http://wiki.wireshark.org/DHCP

    OK, there is an DHCP-request:

    23:34:36.967495 IP 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 00:04:xx:yy:zz:aa (oui Unknown), length 308
But why isn't an IP assigned with two different routers?

    No ideas?

Hm, a webpage where the hardware is sold but where absolutely no mail address can be found, a vendor that is "active" in this board but is submerging when anybody asks a more detailed question ... feels like I found the reason why that board was THAT cheap at eBay: ist simply not suitablke for serious applications...

Can you give me the exact model number of the routers you're using?

And, just to double-check - you're confirming that it gets a 169.254. address with sitter.exe?

You can contact me by PM, by email at jacob@durbatuluk.us, or on the PL IRC. This is an issue I haven't seen before and it's hard to debug without more info...

Also, can you send me the full output (a screenshot or something) of sitter.exe? (http://ether-dream.com/sitter.exe)

    Thanks.

Currently a D-Link DSL-2641B, the other one I used for testing is a Siemens Gigaset SE 515 dsl

    > And, just to double-check - you're confirming that it gets a 169.254. address with sitter.exe?

Yes. Meanwhile I tired it using an own, small program to receive the broadcasts. Amazingly I can receive the broadcasts within my 192.168.1.x network but the source they come from still identifies as the wrong network:

    recvfrom(sock, buf, BUF_SIZE, 0, (struct sockaddr *)&bc_addr, &addr_len); -> receiving broadcast message

sprintf(ipBuffer, "%s",inet_ntoa(bc_addr.sin_addr)); -> here the source of the broadcast is 169.254.x.x

    sitter.gif

This screenshot is only half of the story, that IP posp up only for a short time, most of the time the window is just empty.
