    Default Quad 445

Anybody here, have any problems with running 445 diodes in series with the flexmod 3 ?
Im running a quad 445, withe a 24 volt 10 amp power supply, and cant seem to get the quad module past 2 watts...
    What am i missing??

without knife mirrors what is each diode doing power wise? What drive current do you have?

Well, when setting up the drive current, out of the P3 driver,
Should the current read 1 amp , or 4 amps?

When i unplug the diodes, and read the current, with an ammeter,
And no load, right now its reading 1.2 amps....

    Thx for the help!!

In series is 1A to 1.2A so sounds like its working perfectly if thats what you get on ammeter / dummy load. That was max I ran mine at for no problems so I'd look at your lenses / mirrors/ knife edging to get the power from centre stripe etc Remove the mirror etc and measure just a single diode to see what its giving out.

    4 is serie need

    voltage 6x4 = 24 ( so good)
and in serie there is only 1 current same treu all diode's

    so it is correct.

some people advice me to use 7,5W for a driver of a bleu diode ( to make sure you get the start current / drempelspannng)
depending on the diode, so maybe.. (but i think not) you need a little bit more voltage...

but 1,2A is allready max load, so the power must be over 1W / diode or you blow them up allready.. then the power is verry low... but they keep working. i kill also some, now i keep them safe on 1A or less...

    Question

    Hi

Did you put any resistor in series?
    Dumb question, but some did.

And whit 24 Volts is not enough if the resistor is like 1 Ohm.

    Cheers,
    Ed

Well, i picked off, one of the diode beams to check knife edge mirror loss, turns out there is 250mW loss, so there goes 1 watt !
Still missing another watt somewhere though...

Oh, another thing, there are no resistors used

You will find a small amount of loss just from knife edging regardless of the mirrors due to loosing part of the beam with a tight knife edge

What mirrors are you using? I have some HR blue mirrors that are very low loss indeed

you can better use a 99% HR mirror.
always less lost than a digro filter..

    your mirror look like digro

when i see this i think change and put normal hr mirror.
but maybe i mistake, i never see yellow mirrors.
if this is a mirror not a digro, then this mirror will reflet yellow light mutch better then bleu light!!!

I think its time to comment on this thread since people are fishing about what happens. First of all it the Dichro,s are blue mirrors from laserwave. They are bought from rob stanwax and ordered by 300evil. No point of selling mirrors when rob can sell them too. The setup is build by 300evil and he did a fine job. Although i didn,t build it the stacking systems is my design and so i felt that it would be best that i had a look at it when it will be send to me. Carlos needs a red anyway so i,m happy to help.

Oh joost , it might be a good idea to do some research about mirrors before making people nervous weither the right mirrors are fitted.
Building modules and selling complete systems are 2 completely different things so maybe its good to stick with that until more knowledged is gained.

Well don,t know about that but i,m sure the only one who is crazy about stacking beams instead of doing lasershows in the netherlands. I only care about divergence, beamsize ,alligment stabilty and everything else that has to do with stacking beams. What, i don,t even own a projector

But that will come one day

well, the reason im asking for help, is because after waiting for 10 months for these lasers to arrive,
they finally did, i ordered 2 quad modules, and 1 is doing 2.5 watts , the second module is doing 1.5 watts, and the temerature drops to .5 watt,
after further investigating, i found that the reason its dropping in power , is because 1 of the 2 tecs, is open, thus causing the module to overheat.

the module is a very nicely engineered unit, but the the build is lacking.... i dont think they were properly adjusted.

ive been very patient, but after sending multiple emails to the builder (from the groupbuy), and multiple phone calls, im lucky to get 1 response, for every 10 emails sent.
im done trying to get help from the builder, so i need to figure these out for myself..

another thing.. i paid for a complete unit, expecting approx. 4 watts, but what i ended up with , was a bunch of crap.
im not really savvy with building modules, nor do i have the time to spend with these kits, that is why i paid to have them built in the first place!, but it looks like i have no choice.

its really disturbing to see PL members. selling products on here, but are totally rude, when the product fails, and you ask for assistance, only to get no response in return, had i known , i would have simply purchased from a professional manufacter!

i appreciate the people on here offering advice , on what the cause may be, and i understand this is not Edisons fault, nor am i blaming him.

i just wanted to post this, so other members, are more carefull, on who they do business with.

I can understand your frustration. Like i mentioned in your PM i,m happy to fix your quad when you are planning to order a red as a service even if i,m actually not to builder of the unit.
If you send it to me i can fix the unit and send it back to you as a partially service when ordering a red.

For example, whatsupadrian bought also a quad kit and build it. He wasn,t satisfied with the result. I also didn,t build it but i felt kind of sorry for him and swapped it for a 6 combiner

Don,t worry about this, what ever the problem is with your build i can fix it. I call the service from the house

So just let me know when you want to go red and ship it to me so i can fix it

    Problem solved

My first hunch is thermal issues. Check these items:
-Is the Flexmod attached to a suitable heat sink? Does the transistor get too hot to touch during operation?
-How are you dissipating the thermal load of the TEC? For every watt of heat you remove from the module via a TEC, you've got 2 to deal with on the other side. Some bigger pictures of your setup would be helpful.

Yes, with the one-unit, the one-clear fault is the wide-open TEC - and, it clearly *arrived* that way, it was not 'fried', from use, etc.. So, for this unit, since there's no real 'heatsinking' via the TEC, and - with the TEC not able to work, at all - the poor little quad just turns itself into an oven, and the diodes, well... die... slowly but surely they drop to next to nothing...

The second-order problem - which plagues *both* units, is more of a 'design-issue', in-that, a) - imho - the optics-used are incorrect for this type of combo - they should be mirrors, not dichros - Yeah, you can use dichros, but these are more the type you would use for 'summing' ie: 532 with the 445, not the 'best' per-se, for R-only.. Additionally, b) they - (again, imo) - are *way* too-thick, and they are clearly 'cropping' a good 1/3 of the useable-power sweet-spot.. Yes, it's understood - that's 'inherent with knife-edging', but it's also true that the thinner the 'kerf', the more efficient you can make your knifing / power-output... So, really - both of these just need to be rebuilt... and the one TEC, replaced..

I've offered to help Sir C to re-do these - and w/O any 'sales-strings attached' - I'm sure between Herr Janitor and I, we can make quick work of reparing these 'sick patients', and have 'im up an running 3-4W, as-purported, inside of a long-afternoon... we've got thin-kerf mir, and some actual 'blue-band specific' dichro that is *insanely* efficient @ 445 - Spec and I were both left jaw-agape - it has to be like 99.9999% R for 445... unBluelievable...

..but, clearly, the builder at least needs to make the time to take care of his customer - at *least* communicate and make amends on the TEC / perhaps some 'restitution' for the additional time / labor that needs to be spent on these, to get them where they *should have been* when they landed... Yeah, everyones' busy / up to their eyeballs in cow-chips, but.. ya gotta at *least* communicate, and try to make it right.. my 'faux pas' with Sir Clan, awhile back is a shining example.. I did drop the ball on him - certainly, not out of any 'malice' or intent, but - no matter - he was totally right, and I deserved the 'spanking' I got.. But, it got him the results He wanted - and deserved - he got his replacement Controller, and, afaik, it's still cranking away, happier than a pig in

..So, hopefully, Sir C can get some response / a new TEC, etc, at least, from the builder, and we can move this along, and get him on his way to happy 'B-G-Cyandom' ..But, no - it's not something 'the Op is 'doing' or not-doing', etc... the Mang has got skillz and 'a clue'.. that's just my objective observation..

    Dos centavitos..

Edison, i cant tell if your being sarcastic or whatever , regarding the "free" comment.

The reason i posted this issue here, is to let other members know, that i PAID , 1,000.00 in labor only ,
to have a pair of these kits built, from Adam / 300Evil ,
And i also asked for others peoples's suggestions / things for me to look for , that might be the problem.
I never asked you or anyone else, to fix them for free, i dont expect anyone else to clean up mr. 300evil 's crap!

So please stop trying to sell me more of your products, in order to repair the ones i allready own.

It wasn,t ment to be sarcastic at all. Anyone can see that the stacking system is mine and you say " the builder" doesn,t respond to your emails. Most people here would think that is was the builder instead of 300evil. Why just say from the start that he did the build? That would at least clear up that i,m not the builder. I,m not repairing someone else his car when he bought it somewhere else. I have helped people in the past with their kits, but i didn,t even recieved a thank you or that they decided to buy another module to support me. I support anyone as long as they support me. I think that is fair. I think its great that MR Jon offers you a solution since he is close to you that,s all.

What you paid doesn,t matter. If i sell a product and within a year it doesn,t work properly i repair it without any cost. That is called garantee. I offered you a solution and you didn,t reply back to me to if i couldn,t repair it just for an additional cost instead of together with buying a red.

That,s why i don,t sell kits anymore because even if i didn,t build it people always expect me to repair it. But when the next time comes and you offer a scanset for 5Usd more then somewhere else then will buy it from them instead of you. I stopped believing in people to come back to me just for service. That is because hobbyist don,t make money on doing shows and so every penny is to much. If you look at for example complete modules, everyone want to have the most mw/usd or euro. Mr jon here is offering you free service so stop with complaining and send him a pm. If Mr jon needs help or has quuestions i,m happy to answer his questions. Could we please get on with more important things in live then some stupid module that doesn,t work? It will get fixed left or right so stop worrying

    Thanks!!!!

Yes, the solution you offered me was, to "buy" another module from you, then you would fix the one i allready have,
    NO THANKS!
I didnt want to mention any names, from the start, because i did not want to step on any toes, or at least give them a chance to email me , and fix the problem, since they have decided to stop answering phone calls.

You made money selling the kits, 300evil , made money on assembly, what the hell am i asking you for free?

I thought i would purchase your kit , and Pay Adam for assembly, to help YOU out , i should have purchased from a pro manuf. like kvant or Rgblaser. ( i can afford to go either way),

but im glad your responses are up here for everyone to see, that way they know what they are getting into, when they decide to buy from people like yourself.
