Default Tool for tapping holes square

    Hey guys,

Check out this little beauty I just bought.
    http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/T0119

It's to help you tap holes square. It's a little pricey but after using it I'm glad I bought it.

It has a magnetic base which at first glance isn't much use as we mostly use aluminum but all you need to do is find something ferrous to attach the magnet to.

It's a pretty simple little rig but nicely made.

Hopefully with a bit more searching you guys can find one close by a bit cheaper.

    Good luck
    Kit

Where did you end up getting the heatsink from?

    Hey guys

I haven't got a drill press at home yet. My flat mate who has as much
fun as I do building stuff is buying one next week. We've got a pretty good community tool sharing thing going and a
drill press will be a welcome addition.

I've just been using and old work mates milling machine today to face the heat sink flat and drill holes.

It's been 5years since I've had access to a mill. Mmm mmm I'm in heaven
able to machine things myself again

The heat sink? I got it from http://www.deltourheatsinks.nl/

    Thanks FourDee! You da man!

I can't recommend them highly enough. Fair prices, quick shipping and friendly attitude.

    Great to be of service
I've dealt with them in the past and I was very pleased with the service as well.

I placed an order with them for an entire case I designed (including heatsink) and I pretty much needed to have it a week later.
They went the extra mile to make it work

I've been found out I try and blame my slow progress on rarely being home to actually work on actual hardware so instead I spend my spare time away designing/planning and more designing and planning and so on

Hey the clean work bench isn't mine, it's my flat mate Steve's, I'm doing my best to trash it.

Here is mine, am I off the hook for being faker?

    Is it suitably messy?

Hey Kit, at first I thought "huh? tap square holes?"

Then it clicked, tap "true holes".

Nice. When do I get to see this RGB in action?

Hey Wayne, I fly home Saturday night. I need to tap a few more threads and then I can mount the power supply and laser module. Going to machine features for mounting the cooling fans on Monday.

I could probably do with some help setting up the ILDA interface board.

I haven't received my scanners yet but at least we could get a beam out of it. Are you free Tuesday night?

    That mag base is sweet.

I have been using one of these for small parts.

Its called a mini-tapper. Its worth every penny. I'm not sure how I lived without it?

Perfect! I just did a search for the mini-tapper and found a post where people removed the handle (and turned up an adaptor I imagine) so you can drive it with a cordless drill. Niiiiiiice, what more could you want?

Possibly, although my lab is dismantled for re-decorating.

    Hey Kit,

Nice to see you are at work with the heatsink.

For future reference, we are well equipped to drill these holes for you. This is all assuming you will be requiring more heatsinks in the future ;-)

Drop us a line for a quote if you want. All we need is a drawing of the orientation of the holes.

Hmmm, interesting! Would like to hear more about your products and services. I am toying with a new projector design based around an appropriate heatsink. Where in the world are you? Any URLs etc?

    Hey taggalucci

I just bought the same peace of heatsink that Kit did but I think a bit longer (700mm long)

As Kit post above there URL is http://www.deltourheatsinks.nl/

They are based in Amsterdam so shipping to Australia is a tad expensive however it was here in under a week

I can highly recommended them and the service is great (with very fast turn around), Speak to Maurits and he'll sort you out

    Hi Maurits, welcome to PL

I was originally planning to get someone to machine it but
I want to make as much of it myself as I can for the personal
satisfaction. Also I have a habbit of over planning and progressing slowly
with my projects. I'm living on the edge and making it up as I go:P

I'll definitely be in touch if I need anymore heat sinks and I can't find them in Australia.

    Cheers
    Kit

TBH you know what is cheaper?
Go to Harbor freight and buy one of those cheap drill presses and use a 20% off to get it for under 40$ and just take a few parts off of it and you have a tapping setup. just rig a crank to the top.
Ive thought about adding a one of those slow revolving hand drills to it so it can be auto.

Forgive the stupid question, but isn't the thing that dictates the true-ness of the thread the pilot hole, rather than the tap?
I have tap sets where they are in 3 grades (only works for thru holes usually), the first one drops part way into the hole before it starts cutting, so it's held true to the hole anyway. The remaining taps follow the threads of the first.
My biggest problem was getting the holes true without a drill press, but dsli_jon put me onto this (the first one)

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.
