based on logic and this thread, there are 3 proper pronunciations..
#1 se-leem, because thats what the guy that names the event calls it
#2 se-lem, because i have proven this is a proper pronunciation of the spelling and stated reference.
#3 sea-lem, because the E sound is from the word 'east' which is the root of the original.
so the answer is this:
S.E.L.E.M is an acronym and SHOULD be pronounced "es-ee-el-ee-em"
any other pronunciation is based on the will of the speaker and should be accepted by any attendee, so long as that pronunciation has some logical merit id is not offensive in any way (obviously the same rules would not apply to F.L.E.M.)

Whoa, we have a linguistic here!
In my opinion "es ee el ee em" is too long to be accepted, "selem", "seleem" or "sealem" is much shorter.
By the way we Dutch-speaking guys pronounce it as "See-lem" (and not "Sielem" or something you Anglo-Saxon speaking guys might pronounce it)
Does it make me a nerd when I go to a party with my laptop?
Yeah, Like SELEM DION- no, not really. Eh, definitely eh.

I'm going to go ahead and bump this thread.
I thought I had it figured out, but then I hear a bunch of people pronouncing SELEM "Sa-Leem".
I thought it was Sa-Lemm. Let's get this sorted or else, I'm not going next year! The way I see it, when you talk about a "LEM" you pronounce it "lemm." Why wouldn't that translate to something like SELEM or FLEM?
-Jonathan
In truth, it really doesn't matter. However, here's the backstory:
I came up with the SELEM acronym back in the spring of 2006, even though we never had a SELEM in 2006. At the time, I pronouced it "Sa-Leem", because I thought it sounded better with a long E sound. It all seemed academic at the time, because the event never happened.
Then in the fall of '06, we had a meet in Orlando, Florida. I decided to stick with the "LEM" idea, so we called that event FLEM. Again, I stuck with the long E sound, making it FLEEM. But everyone liked the idea of a laser event called "PHLEGM", as in the nasty lung cheese you cough up when you have bronchitis.
At this point, I'm clearly in the minority, as most people prefer the short E sound. And I'm cool with that. To tell you the truth, this year I think I'll be pronoucing SELEM as "Sore back, no sleep, but great people, great food, tons of equipment, and awesome laser shows meeting" Still, "SE-LEEM" still has a nice ring to it, don't you think?
Adam
Most definately sell 'em. Then again, it's an acronym, so shouldn't it be pronounced "ess-e-ell-e-em"?
Edit: Crap! just realized i'm necroing/shame
Just my $.02
I'm with you Adam. Never have heard a soul say the word yet but, my first impression was "cell-leem". Just rolls off the toungue well.
Thanks for the support, Brad!
I agree that it sounds better, but it appears that you and I are in the minority on this one. Sigh... Oh well, no matter how people pronounce it, it's still a fun event!
Adam
And how to you say FLEM...?![]()
I always seem to be in the minority. Sigh...
Here... put an end to it!
South Eastern Laser Enthusists Education Meeting !
After all, it's supposed to be "edjumicational" as well as fun too, right?![]()

Say you decide to put on a laser enthusiast meeting - a LEM... How would you pronounce "LEM"?
Thanks for reviving this thread. I've been meaning to myself but didn't quite get around to it.

Aaron:
I still call it "fleem", with a long E sound. Yeah, I know "phlegm" is funnier...
Johnathan:
I call them all leems, with a long E sound. It may not be grammatically correct, but it's what sounds best to me.
Like I said before; I've always pronounced it this way. But others don't agree, which is why so many other people pronounce it differently. Oh well...

Just remember: The liver is an evil organ(isation) and must be punished!
Besides, it's 7 times larger than it has to be. Surely it won't matter if we kill just a little part of it with alcohol, right?
