Default Laser projector add on effects?

I don't know about you guys, but one thing I've been missing is add on effects in laser projectors, in particular, scan-thru effects. Problem is, I just can't come up with a cheap, effective, compact design. I always come back to a design I found in an old AVI projector, see pics below. Ultimately, the pnuematics can be replaced by push/pull solenoids. It's not entirely compact, but it did work. Is there anyone out there that has scan-thru effects in thier projectors currently? Care to share your design?

I have been meaning to use a servo to move a burst grating in front of the scanners in our biger RGB. I think I sent one of the servo driver boards to you Dave, why don't you give that a shot

your timing is excellent. i've been wondering about how to construct dmx controlled lumia and effects wheels to strap into a projector.

i haven't gotten past just mentally kicking some ideas around and am interested in anything you learn.
suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

You absolute did, Dave! That's a fantastic idea. I'll have to pick up a couple servo's and see how well that setup works. These driver boards were for a single servo?

edit- would this work with your driver?

it has 2 rotating wheels one with 20 static positions one with 6 rotating positions with speed and direction and one 3 postion static flag also it controls 2 more steppers for a fading shutter and 2 more gor the x/y mirror

i may let a few go i have to see how many i can get working

Great minds think alike. I have been toying around this idea too. Same deal dmx, servos...

Dsl, Good ole laserium. The de-facto standard for scan glass effects. I remember the system from gates planetarium a LONG time ago. Still Love that stuff.

I always had good results using servos. I like the idea of using a gobo wheel from an intelligent light though.

If someone would waterjet or cnc me some wheels, I will come up with a AVR based driver.

It would take all of a hour to program that little piece of code, including the traveling salesman math. I'll use a AVR board from OLEMEX (14$) and a dc motor so everybody can duplicate it. We could get fancy and put in some 3/4" clear bore instrument bearings, which you can get from the folks who sell spare parts for Martin etc. That way the effects themselves can spin. 270' of travel from a servo doesn't cut it for me. The lathe here at work only has a 4" swing, and no rotary table,so there is no easy way for me to make one.

    See attached.

Jon! How could you?! I'd have to sell one of my kids for that thing! What a work of art though. Is that what you guys are running over there in the Laserium thing? I'd love to get out there to see that.

Steve- how quickly is that gobo able to make a complete cycle? The one thing that has kept me from considering such a device is thinking of how long it would take to cycle from one effect to another, where as a solenoid or servo driven "flag pop in effect" seems like it would be many times faster.
