Pics that will make you cry (halfnote)

Hello Guys

I received the halfnote laser from Smogthemog yesterday, in return for the ALC909 whitelight i have sent to him..
The laser arrived in very bad condition..
I cant figure out how to attach pictures to personal messages here, so now i am posting them in the forum...
Then you guys can also come with your oppinions on wether or not this will be fixable, or what you would recommend us to do about the deal..

I want to stress that i am not writing this to put Jim (smogthemog) in a bad light or to start another "laser ben VS. smoghtemog" thread, only to display the pictures and find the best solution..


When i received the box it looked like this.. a bit dented, but nothing that would any major concern... later i found out about the cut in the side, like something sharp had pierced it..




It soon becme evident that the contents of the package had received a serious beating.. notice the mounting flanges on the psu here , they are bent back as far as the screws allow...


On the controller PCB, some wires had been detached from the pcb.. i can't see where they should go.. there doesnt seem to be any solder residue, where they were previously soldered..


Then i dared to look at the laser itself.. It was making a pretty bad rattling noise when tipping it from side to side, so i kinda knew what to expect..


Tears filling my eyes...


KTP mount/oven is detached from its mount and is only hanging by the wires..


A couple of optics laying loose at one end, along with a lot of small glas chips..



A big chip of glas missing from the ktp holder.


A few more glas chips laying loose inside the laser..


The KTP holder has knocked a big chip off the OC mirror..


This other mirror also has some damages around the edge, from the ktp oven hitting it..


It is extremely hard to take a good picture of it, but the KTP also has some tiny scratches on the surface from banging around inside the head..




All the three parts were packed in antistatic bags, and the head and psu had a layer of bubblewrap around them, and there was some bubblewrap and styrofoam in the box also... I wouldnt call it really good packing, but on the other hand, i dont think it SHOULD be necessary to pack it any better..
The package has received a serious beating, but given that we know this happens, it probably should have been packed better..
I know i have made the same mistake and not packed stuff well enough a few times (Thanks Kevin), but it really shouldnt be necessary to pack it better..


Anyway, i will discuss this issue with Jim, and hopefully we can find some kind of solution..

Any good suggestions to wether or not this laser is fixable, or what can be done to resolve the situation, is received with thanks !

Oh dear Simon, that doesn't look too good .

I'm assuming the goods were sent insured postage, if so, I would start to file a claim immediately, or maybe this is something Jim has to do from this end.

That is terribly sad..

Without exact replacement optics and a new KTP, and thousands of dollars worth of alignment tools, I don't think that laser is fixable.

If you end up stuck with it, you could harvest parts for your other half-notes. The YAG rod should be OK since it's fairly well protected, as is the business end of the diode..

I think it is something Jim needs to do, since he's got all the receipts and stuff from when he shipped out the laser.. I hope these pics can help him.. But yes, according to Jim it should be insured..

Geez, that is very sad. Sorry to see this and best of luck getting compensated for it. If you file a claim, don't you have to give the item over to the post office and it becomes their property?

I am quite sure Jim will make good on this. My suggestion is to start a claim IMMEDIATELY on this. your pictures prove that this was some absurd handling! My guess is that Customs probably inspected the package and took everything out. They obviously had to have caused this damage. Either that, or the plane that this flew in for delivery crashed into the side of a mountain.

Even a poor packing job would have provided protection against this damage. This looks almost intentional. Like there was some pissed off or drunk a**hole handling this package at the shipping/receiving center.

What a shame. I am sure jim will get on this immediately.
