Default Forum Upgrade next week. It's going to be nasty.

    Heya there.

Vbulletin will be releasing an update sometime next week and I am debating the logistics of doing a rapid deployment and catching up or staging the deployment and then minimizing the amount of catch up needed at the expense of time...

The actual "functional" downtime should be less than 2 hours as I get it to an operational state on the live database... So, what would you do?

    Poll Attached.

    Why delay the inevitable.

Shut her down, do what is neccessary, sort the problems, 2 prods on the gas, a little choke, clench your buttocks and crank her over.

Phased upgrades always prolong the heartache; this affects that, that effects this, now that effects that and we're back to square one.

I'd turn off the board, full backup, patch the database and files then fire it back up.

Back when I was doing this sort of gig, it was always easier (for me) to do updates offline. It might be a little inconvenient for the users but it would be sooo much easier on you.

    Just IMO......

I'd just go for it and do what you have to do .

Please be sure to try and let us know exactly when the downtime will be though as it could be important for those of us with deals going through and being discussed via PM.

Here's wishing you the best of luck

    Cheers

Gladly. As soon as I get the release notification I will try and schedule the install during some of the rare down time(2300EST-ish) and dump a notification somewhere on the board.

I will be spending the majority of this down time in the fetal position shivering in the corner, possibly with a small dribble of spittal oozing from my mouth

We could all go over to LPF and hang for a while like a bunch of sailors at port for the parade...

Seriously Robert - just do it. We can live with the board being off-line for 2 hours if it saves you a day of labor.

Subscription system was implemented and I removed the donate button out of fear that I would be called a dirty money grubbing sack of shit.

That being said; I'll probably re-enable it soon. Theres a long story behind how financially screwed I am but I'll skip it aside from stating that I will not be buying any christmas presents for anyone. Even "base" bills are very very iffy.

No need for that... I can setup a fake board somewhere to play on or just make sure to get the irc wrapper done beforehand. It shouldn't be too bad knock on wood.

Now *thats* an interesting idea. I could see that as a public service campaign or some other form of court ordered atonement.

I don't know man... I get IM notifications from people that PL is down faster than the script engine can process error reports.

The first and last are the quick ones, including telling Mr.MySQL to take a long nap.

    I totaly Agree.

Go offline, Backup everything!!, run upgrade.

I have seen more than one Databases crash dutue an upgrade.

A full dump of the Mysql db is verry easy with the mysql admin tool availeble on there site.
Just connect it remote and backup the full DB.

What i do for File backup is, compress everything into a archive before i upgrade any db.

Yeah, but this is different... It's a planned outage. Hopefully most folks will be aware of it ahead of time, which should lessen the shock factor.

Eh, I dunno... Even if he did reset it, at my current rate I'd probably catch back up in - what - a year maybe? Really need to find a cure for this persistent verbal diarrhea I've got!
