A few of us on the '77 Led Zeppelin crew went to Griffith Park to see Laserium on a night off in LA. We were blown away and talked all night about how it was done. Someone asked the Laserium operator why the console had no labels? He said that if you needed labels, you shouldn't be operating it. From then on, none of my consoles had labels.

Oh man, that quote makes me jealous from a minimum of three different angles!

Well that was part of it. The other part was you just didn't have time to look for labels. You were looking at the dome. Laserium in those days was Analog – the laserist was doing real time eye/hand synchronization as part of the control system. Many of the best licks involved making the image change direction exactly on cue, or the evolution of the image phasing, or re-synchronizing the spiral rate perfectly when the tempo changed at the bridge, or exactly how the color mod and chopper frequencies beat against each other and the image. Imagine playing an instrument where the artistry involves bending the note to make it beat just right against the other notes – that’s sort of close…

One offset the images in one of several modes, and the other was z-axis image rotation. The functions were interchangeable. I remember it being possible to put both functions on one joystick, but that might have just been me screwing around at some point - I don't remember using that in a show.

    Cool

    Hey Kats -

Found a couple kool shots whilst 'cleaning house' at Images... these are not from 'DSOTM', of course, but some 'old-skool inspiration' for ya's, nonetheless... ..especially for you 'scan-thru fx' / 'add-on fx' and 'lumia lovers' groups, out there... keep up the great werk!

    Hi Jon

They're lovely. Any idea how these were created? are they just good abstracts or was there some exterior 'force' involved?

    Cheers

...nope, just the layers-deep cycloid generators in the Laserium 6B console... classic analog controls, put-to-use, very well...

    cheers...

    Wow!

You're not kidding, I wish I could get great looking abstracts like those. I'm in awe at what the likes of Mike Dunn produce and try hard to replicate some of his cool effects using LD2000 or LivePRO's abstract generators. Sadly, i'm not even close to acheiving anything that looks like those in your post. What i'd really like is for some kind person to send me a list of settings for the LD2000 abstract sliders that show a really cool 'morphing' type of effect, I could then work from there.

The way the abstracts 'morph' in some of the 'professional' showtime shows amazes me. There must be a killer secret somewhere that explains how this is done ;-)

Thanks again Jon for taking the time to post those, it's an inspiration to me.

    Cheers

Keep in mind the 1st image was almost certainly produced with 4 scan pairs and chopper. The 2nd image almost certainly involved frequency and amplitude modulation at the image generator and then being processed as swept spirals...

Thanks 'Laserist', I guessed there was probably more to it. However, I keep getting told that lots of the 'abstract' parts of the shows that come with the LD2000 software were produced using nothing more than the abstract generator within LD2000 itself.

I'm able to get some cool looking effects but cannot acheive the 'morphing' and 'blends' that the professionals seem to be able to acheive.

I'll keep playing and maybe one day i'll get lucky. In the meantime all hints and tips are greatfully received

    Cheers

    Hey Jeremy...

Have you tried loading up an ILDA frame and using that as the waveform, rather than the default triangle, sine, or square waves? You can get some very cool effects that way.

Also, have a look at the settings for some of the abstracts in Mike Dunn's shows. (Load the show's frame file, then fire up the abstract generator.) Seeing how he's done it will probably inspire you to try different things.

Finally, DZ posted a cool tutorial on making quick and easy abstracts here on PL a while back. Here's the link.

Thanks Adam, yes i've tried that and you're absolutely correct, it does make for more interesting effects.

Doh!!!, what a brilliant idea. Why did I never think of that?

So, if I load the frame file the sliders will automatically set to the settings that were used to create the original abstract?, how cool is that

Thanks Adam, you're an absolute mine of information, don't know what PL would do without you

Seriously though, I love playing with the abstract generator. it's my favourite bit of software in the whole LD2000 suite. I just wish the preview window was bigger.

I'm getting better results now, but those beautiful colour/morph effects still elude me.

    Cheers

    Jem

Edit: Just watched the short video tutorial. I now need to get home and start playing again
