    SAGE was the computer that produced 3D effects in Laserium shows beginning in 1987. It was a separate thing from the Choreographics system.     I would assume it is just an analog signal, you might want to take a look at the old OpenLase project by Hector Martin. That should give you some inspiration and technical insight.
