I will again when testing the new build, but yes, 5V per div on the scope shows clean flat +-15 and +5. The new one shown here is almost ready for testing anyway.

no it not legal. I also question the products longevity lacking tons of cooling.. scanning likely going to be crap at the low currents/voltages.

Have you checked your supply voltages?

Thanks Steve; I have located a suitable crystal that is damaged, but has plenty of undamaged material to be able to cut 1, or possibly 2, crystals. Now all I have to do is locate a local person who has lapidary skills! I found a club, but it's at the opposite end of the country from me.

I've replaced all the semiconductors including the transistor and the diode, and the problem persists. The only thing that seems possible is a breadboard connection failure that survives spraying and re-seating, as unlikely as that seems. so I'll be converting the parts seen in the tray into a...
