ML is multiline, SL is single line, BL is blue line, GL is green line, VL is violet line etc

That does look like it's a single line 488nm argon BTW ;)

As with regards to the above... as a general rule, gas lasers like to stay on, rather than be switched on-off repeatedly... And if you turn it on, might as well keep it on for a couple hours at a time, even if only at idle power. Also, don't let them sit for too long (months to years). I'd say at least once every 6 months take a few hours and fire this puppy up, keep it on, nice and and cool, then pack it and send it back to storage :cool:

At least this is how I treat my gas lasers :)

What line is the 'BL' designation? Is it 476.5nm?

If the power supply is wired for light mode and you remove the photodiode assembly, that is bad, as it will shoot up to the upper current limit and stay there.

Tube lifetime is inverse exponential with respect to current, so if you run at rated max current, you get very little lifetime.

I have a chart of that posted in the FAQ. Have you emailed or phoned JDSU tech support to find out what you have?

Thats what I was thinking, but then I saw two tubes of the same year and one was SL and the other BL... I never saw them fired up so I still dont know for sure.

"BL" stands for "blue lines." The "BL" optics pass four wavelengths; 458 nm, 476 nm, 488 nm, and 497 nm
