Projector mounting and masking, reflective objects downstream. If his projector is not well clamped and well trussed, he's still got issues.
If he is relying on scan settings to protect the audience, IN THE US, he should instead have masking. Europe relies on scan fail systems, and CDRH has traditionaly set a very high standard for those, one that is difficult to meet. (Something like detect fail and react in 200 nanoseconds)

If the projected pattern seriously vibes with the beat, from speakers moving the projector, its wrong in so many ways. Including artistic.

There are the classic Coors Silver bullet, Mylar balloon, and girlfriend(s) on boyfriend's shoulders issues.

3 meters vertical minimum, from accessable points, and two meters horizontal. Its not just the code, its a good idea :-)

Not much you can argue at that point, except liability. Is is his operator TRAINED and Signed a document on not to aim down?

Good point lazergirl! I was not trying to assume anything just gain a bit of perspective on the whole safety and legality aspect of laser shows.

So are we to assume that 'ThatLazerGirl' is in fact the laser guy being referred to (or an associate/partner)? The wink could mean anything tbh.

In which case, how do you respond to the crowd scanning and non-varianced projector allegations? Is a 'close knit community' relevant in safety discussions?

I would be the wife (and associate) of the laser guy in question.

Here in STL, we are all associates, a family if you will, as there are only so many people involved which takes a good bit of mystery out of the identities involved here, which is what "brinnswf" seems to have neglected to realize. This is an attempt to get rid of local competition, and has NOTHING to do with safety or legality.

We are always up front with our customers about our commitment to safety and our legality. We owe no explanation of our business or methods to anyone here, and we will provide none. We've been involved in the scene in STL in many capacities for over 12 years, and we include most of our clients among our best friends. That is why the fact that the St. Louis live entertainment world is close-knit matters to this discussion.

Having met some of the STL "laser scene", and having done LEGAL shows in more then one of STLs venues.... Including the Pageant when sold out...

One simple question, which will make this ALL go away. Do you have a varience?

I dont need your VRA number, just a simple yes or no....

Having worked with/bailed out two of the "wantabes" in your region, the scene there is not so great. One of them is a absolute idiot with no professionalism , and the other is plain nuts. The one did have the guts to try to mend his mistakes, I'll give him that. The other does "bite".

I'm hoping your the Pro company I've heard of but not yet met...

I have not yet met BrinnSwf, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt...

I was literally posing the hypothetical question that if I happen to find out an illegal laser is in use at a public show, how should I approach it? How is this not a discussion about safety or legality?

Also I'm sorry you feel attacked lazergirl, the fact that you said the laser guy "in question" is an odd statement because my post was in regards to 2 totally separate shows I saw. Only ONE of them had crowd scanning. This is not targeted at anyone person but a general inquiry for my own information and others searching for information on this topic. Though it is quite fascinating that you found this thread and personally replied to it, it's a small world!

True, you don't owe any of us an explanation, but the laser world is also a tight-knit community. This forum is pretty high on the radar, so it may not be a bad idea to address those concerns now or the final word may be the word of a federal agent. If you're doing unsafe shows, regardless of Brinnswf's ulterior motives, you deserve to get shut down. But, if Brinnswf is using the system against you and you're above board, then you know to watch out for a snake.

I really like this and I agree 100% that the first approach should be the personal approach. Myself, I wouldn't hassle anyone for not being varianced as long as what they're doing is safe, but crowd scanning neither I, nor anyone else on this board is going to be very nice about.
