Thank you all for your information and I took your advice and just stayed home and worked on my laser projector ( needed some motivation anyway) I have all the safety features now , inter lock, remote kill, shutter, emissions light, a key switch on the laser going to get another one for the power supply some time to that they whole thing can’t be powered unless you have the key.

So it’s all safe now except it needs an enclosure : ) now the paper work starts and what is
    "
The state of Texas requires a permit for laser shows, so even if you had the paperwork done you need and expensive permit too.
    "

How would I go about getting something like that after I have a variance and product report? and how much are the fees..... is this the same thing as http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/radiatio...DF/RC301-2.pdf that was linked above?

if so how do you become and LSO?

Also about how long are variance applications taking to get approved now days?

Oh yes and big thanks to buffo for helping me get my laser safety features : )

First, (like this means-something special...haha) especially in light of all the recent hubbub over the 'how NOT to do it'-actions of one PL-member, I'd just like to go out of my way to commend you for following the 'high ground' on this! Way to set a GOOD example!! Thanks for showing others the smart, responsible road... really, thanks!!

Well, you can download all those forms, - the instructions ar on that main page, there http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/radiation/laser.shtm OR you can contact Sue Jean, at (512) 834-6688 ext 2248, her emai is Sue.Jean AT dshs DOT state DOT tx DOT us... You could also try Keith Smith, Keith.Smith AT dshs DOT state DOT tx DOT us, but his number appears to have changed, so not sure if he is there anymore.. he was a cool cat and quite helpful...

Mostly, I'd second Steve's advice, call Tim Walsh - he is a really great guy, very helpful, and you just won't find a better or more knowlegeable resource about lasers / regs / shows - in all of Texas, if-not most of the US - really, just about anything you could wanna know about doing shows, etc - YEARS of experience - definitely someone you WANT to get to know / network-with...

Here: http://search.dshs.state.tx.us/searc...ction&oe=UTF-8 looks to still be $340. - not bad... Again, verify with either Sue or Keith - this PDF is dated 2008...

You can become your 'own' Laser Safety Officer - really, just means you are going to be THE ONE responsible for all-aspects of laser-safety / show-regs-compliance, etc - the 'buck stops with you'. You can 'vouch for yourself', based on all the 'homework' on laser safety / regs, etc you have done, and/or you can search-out a local 'course' on laser safety, and possibly get some sort of 'Certificate' - another thing Tim Walsh, there, will be your best local-resource-for...

In any case, what is most important (vs just 'taking some course' our 'getting some Certificate') is what YOU DO, personally, to be-responsible, for laser safety - that even 'trumps the regs - ie: there may-be cases where you can be in perfect-compliance with the regs, but something about the 'set-up' or lasers-used, etc, dictates that 'LSO-wisdom' makes a different-call (ie: I think that bounce-mirror should be a just a little higher.. I really don't think I should put that monster on a crank-truss, etc...) - I think you put-forth a great 'example' of that by choosing to chill vs take the risk of doing the public gig last night... You might have gotten-on fine - but, it could also have turned out to have been a disaster (some moron tips over the laser somecrazyhow and shot someone in the eye with a static beam , etc -yet it was totally not your 'fault', etc - accidents can happen...)

Depends, but you should have some sort of answer from them in 4-6 weeks, possibly less...

I think you'll find that most PL-members, even those with years of experience, (like Tim Walsh, there...) will bend over backwards to help someone who clearly is putting-forth the effort, though a LOT of work at times, to do things 'right', and clearly manifesting a 'mature', responsible attitude toward safety, and also, being at least somewhat thankful / appreciative for help - I really think you deserve to be commended for your attitude and actions, thus far - think you have demonstrated a solid basis for making a 'success' of this, should you so-choose...

    Hope this helps...
    peace..

I feel mis-quoted due to copy and pasted quotes! Although everything you said may apply to me in the future, luckily I don't live in Texas... I hope to see you at SWLEM John, dates pending, it will be in Phoenix, with Laserwizardry as the host! Thanks for letting him know the info so quickly!

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

yeah, it's really not that bad - NY State is the worst, with the ClassB license - 4 hr exam (and it's pretty though - gotta do some fairly deep math and know all kinds of NY laser-regs that don't pertain to show-work... it's pretty arcane...) and an eye-exam / retinal-scan every 3 yrs + $60. for the app... and $600. PER LASER you own - then - $600. PER SHOW, registration fees you do in NY - - TX is not nearly as much 'hassle' as NY - not even AZ is a much of a pain...
