Hi Steve;
SELEM 2010 is scheduled for August 21st and 22nd this year. There is some discussion about stretching the event out a bit, but so far there isn't a lot of enthusiasm for this. Also, as the event gets longer, costs go up, which is a concern.
I was thinking about inviting Casey Stack and/or Mike Dunn to do some presentations this year, but I expect that will add a significant amount to the cost per person. (At least another $70 each, if not more.) I think the presentations would be worth it, but support for the presentations in general is rather thin, as shown in this other SELEM discussion thread. So it may be that we just do a load-in and setup on Friday afternoon (the 20th) like normal, and then just run shows all day Saturday and Sunday and forget about the presentations this year.
Also, one thing that may be new for 2010: Clandestiny has offered to bring a couple of his large frame lasers and do an outdoor show for us, assuming it works with his schedule. We'd be talking about something in the neighborhood of 20 + watts of white light via a Krypton / Argon pair. So that's something to keep in mind. (Will have more details in a month or two when he's finalized his schedule.)
For sure we'll have scaffolding on-stage this time. We may also have a few beam-rail projectors (think Mobolaser) set up. I've got the active direct boxes now, so no worries about 60 cycle hum in the audio this time. And as always, we'll have a for-sale table set up in the dressing room for people to buy/sell/swap stuff, and we'll allow people to tinker with their 3 phase units in the hallway. This year we need to be *certain* that your time is not monopolized, however. (I *will* be cracking the whip on that sort of thing this time around.)
We do need to make a decision fairly soon on the presentations though, since if we're going to schedule anyone we need to give them enough notice... So far I've only heard from a handful of people, and the majority of those have said that the presentations are not a priority when compared to shows. And while I actually enjoy the presentations myself, I understand that most people only get to attend one of these events a year, so I can appreciate why they'd want to watch more shows instead. If that's the general consensus of the members, then I'm up for trying a SELEM that is mostly shows with few (or no) presentations this year.
