    Default Windows 'Write' Program Wanted

    Hi all

Does anyone have a copy of the original Windows 'Write' program that came with Windows 3.1?

I've found some old floppy disks (containing some important information we thought was lost) that belonged to my father, all the files are in 'Write' format. I've rescued these files onto my hard disk and tried opening them using Notepad and Wordpad, but they just show up as scrambled text.

If anyone has a clean copy of 'Write.exe' i'd be most grateful. I'm not too happy about just downloading a .exe file from the internet as I don't want to risk any nasties.

    Thanks

    Jem

If you have a copy of Windows 95 or 98 you're saved:

There's a copy of it in the "Windows" folder in 95 and 98.

    Hi Jem

This page might be of interest: http://www.msxnet.org/word2rtf/

You just have to download something like GCC or a clone to compile the code they give (DJGCC or MINGW should do)

    Jem,
I've got it somewhere. Bring's back memories.
I'll have a look on some old disks I may have when I'm back later tonight.

It's more than likely if you have a 64-bit OS, then chances are it WON'T run as it will be a 16 bit app. But you should be ok if you've got a 32-bit OS, or 99% of XP installs; just thought I'd pop that disclaimer in

ASAIK I believe that write.exe uses the same code as notepad.

I just pulled write.exe from the winnt/system32 folder of one of our NT 4 machines. For whatever reason, when I run it it opens wordpad. I though maybe NT would have the older version, but apparently not. That's the oldest OS we have here..

microsoft write used to encore its content in binary mode

maybe you could open it with a multipurpose editor like textpad or ultraedit

    Thanks Guys

I've tried most of the usual programs to open these files but with no success.

Write was an amazing little program, it always seemed to open files that other programs wouldn't. However, as these files were written in the original 'Write' format I guess that is what is needed to open them.

Dan, thanks for having a look to see if you have a copy. I'll be running it under Win XP SP2 16bit

    Cheers

Thanks to a kind forum member I now have a copy of 'Write' on my desktop. However, the files are on my office PC. So now I have to wait patiently till Monday to transfer the necessary files.

    Cheers
