Second that. I mean, 6 months ago I took my first look at a SP168 (which I helped disassemble after a gig), and having only worked on DPSS lasers before, the thing was even awe-inspiring with the big tube, cooling system, PCAOM and all of the what-not support stuff. And that was even a 5-8 watt unit!

Little did I know I would fix a SP168 a few months later and lose my 'argon virginity' ... Still, I think lasers like this are absolutely awesome, with all of the intricate and complex systems involved to make them work and operate safely. Somehow those cheap Chinese DPSS projectors make it look too easy -- just flip the switch and 'enjoy' the beams.

I'll probably never get my hands on a beast like this. Hell, I don't have a place to put it, let alone have the juice to power a 40W YAG... Still, it's cool to watch systems like this being developed into show-ready units, which may make it to stages near you in the future!

I am pretty curious how you're going to modulate a system like this. Does one use an AOM capable of sinking 40W? I can imagine the frequency doubling unit on this one giving 'jellybeaning' DPSS'es a run for their money.

    (...)

A few young men crept closer to the pit.
A tall funnel rose, then an invisible ray of heat leapt from man to man,
and there was a bright glare as each was instantly turned to fire.

Every tree and bush became a mass of flame at the touch of this savage, unearthly Heat Ray.

its one thing to blind 5000 of your closest friends...you can hang out together and have a few beers and laugh about it later...

However, its a bit awkward to blind 5000 total strangers in one event. People dont understand how dangerous these things are. I said it before...I created a monster but if it wasn't me...it would have been someone else

    safety first!

I've been saying since the moment I understood pulsed lasers and what they are capable of that I'm gonna stick to CW.. at least for the forseeable future. Pulsed lasers scare the crap out of me. 47W+ is AVERAGE power.. I don't even want to think about peak. They sure can be incredible to see doing a show, though.

ya, peak power is a frightening thought... but you can always turn the Q-Switch off
