How many drives are thrown in the bin each year, because the owner thinks they're broken or they bought a BD burner?

Getting a scrap drive for nothing is always easier than getting a sled. Chances are the diodes from a scrap burner are OK, and if you're not that lucky, you can always throw it out as junk anyway.

Besides, those drives are a gold mine when it comes to mechanical parts!

Well in that case, make sure you get the 20x or higher DVD burners. They have some powerful diodes, more powerful than the old 4 and 8 speed drives.
    I didn't fail !
I just found out 10,000 ways that didn't work.

Amen. I have a deal with the local computer shop, they hand me all their replaced/broken optical drives each monday. So far only 6, but that's 6 free drives with optics and a few useable diodes =)

22x drives are where most of the Mitusbishi high power reds come from.

    I believe that LG 22X drives provide Mitsubishi long-die open-can reds rated at 200mW CW, while the GGW-H20L 6X blu-ray burners provide both a 6X (~200mW) 405nm diode and a Mitsubishi long-die closed-can 660nm diode rated at 150mW CW..
