That is just quietly showing off, no one elsewhere in the planet can make one that big. They had to develop the growth technique on site. The plasma driven Q switch is another wonder.
They bathe the Q switch faces in glowing plasma because that was the fastest way of getting the HV pulse evenly distributed across the giant Q switches they use, as no metal film or indium tin oxide coating could take the pulse power.
