This is all supposed to be fun and can be. I build mounts like Pat's all the time. I do it, not because it's so easy, but because I want the design to be tweaked for each application. If you have the mill and some basic tooling it is not hard and the designing is fun, but it is not at all cost effective unless you're unemployed. You can buy the ball screw/ bushing sets for around $5-$15 each (x3) although I have more often dealt with the coarser 3 x 0.5mm cone head set screws by using long lever arms. The ball screws are a pleasure to use, however as well as more expensive. A neat trick to set these up is to drill and tap the three screw holes and then securely clamp the little mirror-supporting plate against the base. Then, with hard steel (not the final stainless ball or cone tip screws) drive the point about one turn into the soft aluminum plate for a resulting perfect alignment. The indentation provides the receiver for the final screw. Then instal the spring (s).

    I tried that once and it didn't work out, but the industry wasn't ungrateful. It just didn't make financial sense for me and, so I learned from it. I don't think the industry was ungrateful for your mounts (generally), they miss them, but it isn't feasible for you to serve that market. You obviously have the skill. What about providing much more expensive, one off mounts for individuals on a custom basis? Not everyone has or want's a mill. And for some, the quality/custom route is worth enough to them to make it worth it for you.
    Exactly. A person isn't going to be able to sell DIY quality parts to a bunch of DIYers and expect to make money.

    To Planters;;

    I didn't use the bushings with my ball tip screws. I just tapped the aluminum and they are pretty smooth. Do the bushings make a noticeable difference? I am not entirely sure of their purpose.

    @ planters - it isn't about the mounts, cost of mounts, number of mounts, design of mounts...I responded with my reasons why I dropped out of the forum selling things...i got bored with the amount of work for the return. It is not about money...I usually see a niche or a trend LONG before it happens (yag for example) I could list dozens of examples that I have been ahead of the curve in my career (the light show industry career)...but that dosnt matter. I saw people needed a way to mount axis modules so I made my mount, I saw people needed a way to combine two of the, 4 of them...and I did it ahead of everyone else...now people are using bearing slides for axis mounts and duals and quads from people who followed my lead. I don't care what anyone in this industry does, because I've done my part in the innovation and the pursuit of excellence and am content with my achievements.

    I have been in this industry my entire professional career and am bored with it and am always exploring new trends. But when I get drama from people who are clueless I call them out. ESPECIALLY those who have no idea the road I have traveled. I made some cool things in my past and have done things others only dream of. This little thing is ...just another gig!

    NONE of this shit is rocket science...anyone can do it. I think my next move is to costa rica and hang out with my old school buddy Photonbeam and drink something out of a coconut NOW HE has the right idea!

    suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

    You are just trolling me at this point...if you don't think the military doesn't follow a chain of command...ie. respect for authority and the chain of command...then you can't be helped. If you are a slave to authority...you are a slave. AND NO...I was not in the military and never would be...I don't blame rank and file...i blame the entire Industrial Military Complex DESIGN as warned by Eisenhower in his final speech...

    the difference between you and buffo is... he is not a D-bag and goes out of his way to help people...you on the other hand...just troll

    I'm picturing you wearing a wife beater tshirt and tinfoil hat while sipping on a Miller High Life. That's how you sound. But anyway, if it will make you feel better I'll just say that "you win" because I can't top the rant about authority figures and Eisenhower. I got out of the military over 20 years ago so I am not sure what that has to do with anything, anyway. As far as me not helping people... usually while I am chatting away on PL I am using busy working on my software and helping customers with questions. As we speak I am helping a guy who is having some DAC driver issues. So, don't complain about people not understanding what is involved with your 2 bit mounts when you have no clue what they are doing, either. Anyway, I am bowing out before I become more stupid from talking to you.

    you might want to ask the VA for a budget for a class in comprehension skills, because I just re read it and it makes perfect sense to me.

    I have no intention talking to Buffo about NUKE ATTITUDE...whatever that is...and no I'm not wrong, if you are a mil, you follow orders, period.

    you are truly an imbecile. YOU brought up you were a NUKE you fucktard. Maybe you should learn about Eisenhowers speech. You actually think I care what you are doing while you are trolling me about my mounts, less on the facts of life and chain of authority.

    Bow out is what I suggested you do fucking 10 post ago... enclosed is a family portrait for you to go to sleep with while you dream of your sole accomplishment in life...Spagatti...

    To be honest, I found Gary to be giving his opinion on the product. It seems like any opinion, other than praise, is met with hostility. To each his own, I don't care how Pat reacts. I just don't think it's fair to jump on someone just because they gave their opinion on it. It has all degraded to trolling at this point. Whatever, I think we all need to pop some Midol after the bad vibes on the threads in these last few days.
