PPRUNE has a Newbie flag. Its says "I'm New Here" with a smiley holding up a flag.
Lets see what happens a bit first.

I should have rented the space under my name for advertising.
When I still could have...
I agree that this would be the issue with limiting access by post count. I was a lurker for a while before creating an account 7 months ago, I still don't post much because I'm learning and don't have much to contribute as of yet, but I'm very much interested in the content here and not putting anyone's eyes out.

The Health and Safety Act 1971
Recklessly interfering with Darwin’s natural selection process, thereby extending the life cycle of dim-witted ignorami; thus perpetuating and magnifying the danger to us all, by enabling them to breed and walk amongst us, our children and loved ones.
I have been a "lurker" here (and on that other forum - I found them before PL) for several months, but dont have much of a post count. My interest is in developing lower cost professional/lab optical sources, primarily for the microscopy industry. My company has a substantial R&D lab, and engineering staff specialising in electro-optical and micro-mechanical systems.
To give you an idea of where I am at, my "host" of choice is a Coherent Radius. TEC cooled, socketed diode, remote modulation control, multiple safety interlock, etc. What you would expect from a laser of this type. It is also perfect for testing the TO-46 package LDs we have been seeing enter the market via "unconventional" channels, e.g. 405nm from BD-ROM drives, that other wavelength from those projectors, etc.
Despite the above, according to most suggestions here so far, I would be locked out of accessing the restricted forum.
Cheers,
Pete
I am going to have to jump in here and respectfully disagree with this idea.
I am currently serving on the Board of Directors in ILDA and have worked at Pangolin for nearly 14 years now. I feel like I am as qualified as anyone here to see any "sensitive" information that this site might have to offer to only certain individuals, and my post count is still under 100.
The password idea seems much better if, in fact, this site decides to make the information available in a limited fashion.

I also like the password idea, but I agree the most with those who have said that we should just wait and see what the admin wants to do about this.
Personally, regarding the Wicked Lasers thing, I'd love to see them create a huge stir over their "1W" portables and then not be able to fulfill them. The only thing that would make it better is if they had started accepting people's money already. Their actions so far with their grossly underpriced and overpowered death ray are stupidly greedy and detrimental to the community.
Ben, truer words could not have been spoken.
This is not something *we* need to solve. It's Spec's decision, and right now I'm sure he's got a lot of things on his mind. Let's give it some time.
The idea of hosting the information, even with restricted access, might still leave the forums open to liability claims. This is what Spec needs to evaluate. So really - let's drop it for the moment. After all, it's not our decision to make anyway.
There is a possibility that this might actually be the case. How much would it suck if all this drama came about over a product that ended up being vaporware? (After all, how many of you think you could manage the heat from one of these diodes running flat-out in a small, hand-held form factor?)Personally, regarding the Wicked Lasers thing, I'd love to see them create a huge stir over their "1W" portables and then not be able to fulfill them.
