635's with a 5x5mm beam and 1.5mR have been around for ages, a correctly FAC'd 500mW 635nm diode is capable of this beam spec with just a cheap PCX lens

Nice to see that the testing of the diodes has begun. I have 13 lenses with different FL,s and NA coming in next week and i have already a few lenses sitting on my desk. Zoof bought a mount from dave for me that i can use to build a test setup.(thanks Zoof!!) That can be used to test diodes like the 445nm but also the 638,s and diodes that are coming on the market in the near future. One of the biggest advantage is that the diode can be removed easely. I use a socket to remove the diode from leads to fit in a new diode ready for testing. When ever there is a new diode on the market it is nessesary to find out the right lens for the diodes. The lens from Roitner has a FL of 3.6 and a NA of 0.45 Try that one and see what happens. Then you know at least wich way to go with the FL i think

Thats why i,m going to test all the lenses on several diodes. I have seen quite a number of post with different lenses that people use. But i never have seen a post with a number of lenses compared to eachother that proofs the right FL and NA. You will only find the right lens when testing a number of lenses with different FL and different NA on a certain diode. I,m pass thinking, i want proof and see it with my own eyes in real life

Wish that I had 2 of them a week ago. Have optics .....no diodes.

Any timeline yet? I would love to get cookin' with one of these things.

The "list" hasn't been updated for ~10 days it seems.

I think they are trying to to figure out how to tame the beam. I know myself that I wont want them until they have that all figure out.

Understandable about the beam I suppose...I'm personally fine with how the results look in those photos up above, the middle photo will do me just fine for what I have in mind.

But I understand others want better, I was just wondering if anyone had a particular timeline in mind on when we might be able to take the next step.

There is a lot of the beam getting clipped in the second and third photos, hence the apparent better divergence, and much lower power!
