This sounds very familiar to something I read about a new LOC red diode over on LPF. I know these are very different diodes but they are both newly released red diodes so they share that in common. Heres a link to the post describing the same thing you are seeing, and if you go to the first post it shows his test results

Could it be due to temperature expansion / movement of one of the mirrors on the die thus taking the cavity out of alignment and stopping it lasing, so it just looks like an LED?

    Just guessing though...

Andy, i send you a pm to explain that you have to focuss the lens in the collimator by twisting the lens into the barrel I forgot to explain how to focus the diode. Maybe you read it so then this message is obsolute

Good news the ML520G72 Red diode is indeed very usable for laser projectors.

The specs I have so far are 4x2mm after the lens, and an oval 7mm x 3-4mm beam at 7 meters. Still adjusting but making progress. Cant see the dimensions after the prisms but add that when I manage.

Using a pair of anamorphic prisms and a bog standard no thrills lens

Looks very suitable and better than any of the new 445nm diode beam specs.

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

Just want a few days to test various methods and post results as i find them, only just really started today and I am taking photos as I make progress.

continuing to express interest as these results come in, sounds good!
