Steve, I know you're an extremely nice guy, and VERY knowledgeable.. you've helped me out before. I have major respect for you because of the fact that you're a good, decent guy. Even though I have high regard for you, I disagree with certain actions you claim to have taken and my respect for you doesn't keep me from speaking my mind:

If you (or anyone) are not wanting to be singled out as an "insider", then not taking it upon yourself to regulate hobbyist access FROM THE INSIDE would be an excellent place to start.

I find it incredible the work that you guys do, jobs like Jon described sound exceedingly challenging. Were it not for the pros, many of the innovations and techniques used today would not exist. I want to be extremely clear about that. I have much respect for all of you guys because of that. Steve, your contributions to the FAQ are priceless. They have helped me many times in the past.

Where our feelings differ greatly is in the idea that being a pro gives you the right to try to dictate to the world in general what they can and cannot have access to. Running off and trying to get manufacturers and authorities to restrict access would very much qualify as actions taken by someone who feels "entitled" to play dictator. Frankly, that's a crock of shit and I'll always be here (god and admin willing) to balance that sentiment with the opposing side of the coin. Fortunately those actions don't seem to have had any effect on the availability of these diodes so far.

The US has some outdated and draconian laser laws. It's unfair for anyone not in a position of governmental authority to take action that could affect laser enthusiasts worldwide based on US safety standards OR their own feelings about the risks involved. It has been proven over time in many other countries that US-style regulations are largely unnecessary. Laser shows are commonplace in Europe with safety violations that would make most US operators cringe, but has it become a crisis? No. Not even slightly. It's about as far from a crisis as you can be, while still falling short of perfect utopia. I know that many of you people will counter that idea by stating that we just haven't heard about all the injuries. If we haven't heard about them, then they can't be very common, and/or the injuries (if any) must not be very noticeable. If people were going blind or developing huge spots in their vision, someone somewhere would know about it for sure. I’ve asked previously, as have others, for some real solid evidence that the lax regulations found in other countries has increased the occurrence of injuries. Not once has any been presented. People always say “Well, we just aren’t hearing about them”. Sorry, that ain’t cutting it for me. Show me the evidence.

I know that you are very well respected Steve, and I include myself among those who have a deep respect for your knowledge and willingness to help people. I simply feel that this one action of yours was way out of line and displays a sentiment that I've seen a few times since I've been here, namely that the pros should keep certain things censored from the public for the public's own good because the public is collectively too stupid to act properly on their own. That is very disrespectful to everyone else IMO, because I feel (based on history) that the VAST majority of people are generally intelligent enough to not act in ways that could potentially harm others through negligence or otherwise. If an individual doesn't wish to share their personal knowledge and expertise for any reason, that is their right and I absolutely respect that. It's simply when someone decides to try to take blanket action to impose their will on the masses that I have a problem, and a HUGE one.

Sorry if this post pisses anyone off, but I'm as entitled to feel the way I do as anyone. I simply want to explain why I responded as I did earlier in this thread. It is not my intention to upset anyone.

I was concerned with Steve's original post because it contained so many censored fragments that it was meaningless to most people. If the stuff is supposed to remain secret, why post about it at all? Then that reminded me of why I care about stuff like that in the first place, especially coming from Steve. Then I just decided to air my feelings in full.

I already apologized in advance if this upset anyone. If you'd prefer I could start a whole new thread about this. I gots no problem with that.

Well, I sincerely hope you mean 'Client' vs 'job' - I honestly think you'll be glad you 'passed'... we'll see...

Translation, for the rest of the class: The job - all things considered - was going pretty-dang well, until the last 7/8 of the shoot, when the (interim-)Client threw a real wrench into it.. basically, he shot himself in the foot on it, cause he veered waaay-off the spec'd / rehearsed-plan, and we simply could not react quite 'fast-enough' to suit the 'high-end' (end-)Client...

...We DID get the 'real-time changes' he called-for done, but they (end-Client) just did not feel like standing out in the rain, any-longer so he (interim-Client) will probably try (I anticipate) to tussle with us over $$.... you know how it is... some Clients will try anything to get a 'discount', deserved or not...

Bottom-line: we delivered - to the Contracted-letter - against pretty-heavy 'odds' / challenges, and delivered, very-well. 'Ultimate mission' was accomplished, they got their 'footage' and (end-) Client was pleased and all will get to where it was-intended-to... SO, 'why worry'?... no reason other than 17 years-experience....

...And that, btw, (past-experience) I believe is the ONLY 'spirit' behind any 'flags' that were raised over the 445-sources in those *ahem* projectors.. I don't think any of the 'pros' (...save-for one or two, that were clearly acting to save their financial-skin...) that lobbied for self-control / caution on simply-who those-things were getting out there-to, were doing-so for ANY other reason than, one akin-to 'WHY' we all encourage 'seat-belt' use in a car... restrictive? Yes. Curbs some 'personal-freedom'? Yes. 'Worth-it'? ...That should-be a self-answering question..

    peace...

I also had a good time,

It was great to finally put a "face" to the laser braniac "mixedgas" aka Steve,
DSLI Jon, the Maestro , of this extremely complicated / difficult gig he pulled off.
And CTLasers Marc, whom i also had the pleasure to meet, on this trip,

I now know the secrets behind the "secret society" .

    Till Next time !!!

I never questioned being cautious with who people sell these diodes to, but to try to block them for everyone? I don't know about that.. It had better be worth hearing me go on about it at length. I think it sucks and I don't keep my mouth shut when I smell shit (surely that's well known by now). Maybe I'd make more friends otherwise, but I really feel like people accomplish nothing by ignoring things they feel aren't right. If you see something you believe is wrong, what good does it do do sit by silently and do nothing? I'd much rather call it like I see it, and try to do something about it. Since I've never met you guys, all I can do is post about it. I would love to civilly discuss many of the issues I've ran into since I've been a member here in person. I'm sure that my outlook could be altered with a better understanding of the folks I've gotten to know here. I've been wrong many times before in life, so I'll admit I could be misunderstanding something about this, but what I've seen in this case I have an issue with.

Regarding your show, I would hope you delivered if you have 17 years of experience.. that what experience is for, to help you figure the best ways to deal with complex, ever-changing situations. Must have been a hell of a show..
