I'm just wondering why olike sell reserve as 650mw lasers even though
    They are 1 watt diodes?

Probably being cautious and haven't cranked up the power to max.

At 1W the diodes get quite hot and the output will decrease a lot if you don't keep them cool enough. Their modules only use a heatsink and no TEC.

you think a fan would be good enough to run them at a higher output?

Probably but a TEC (with a good feedback & driver) will be more stable and less depended on the surrounding temperature.

Also, when you sell 10x 650mW modules and 9 of them are putting out way more and only 1 is just about 650mW then you have 9 very happy customers. This way you can build a lot without having to worry much about the real output of each module. After all these diodes aren’t new and there’s always a possibility that one is putting out less power than expected.

since this isnt DPSS is a proper driver for the tec even really necessary?

couldn't you just put a tec on there and let it rip and still get pretty decent results?

As always it all depends on what your requirements are. Some are happy with almost everything as long as the price is low and others want it to be more stable and don’t mind paying for quality. That’s the difference between a module like this and a more expensive one like Kvant or RGB systems.

For the price these modules look like a great value for the money.

well in their intended application (casio projectors) they are not being TEC cooled right?

The casio projector is designed to be very compact and energy efficient. It would probably end up inside a office for presentations and picture quality doesn’t need to be the best. I’m no expert in beamers but most reviews aren’t positive about the image quality.

So for their intended application they are used to "just create a huge amount of light" and it doesn’t need to be really stable.

The only thing about these modules I don’t understand is the TTL driver. For just a few bucks more they could make it analog. Come on….. >650mW and a TTL driver?
