Guys, do me a favor and stop the LPF bashing. Reason: I dont need 50,000 immature people from the other forum coming over here to degrade the excellent signal to noise ratio of PL, and this thread is just getting too JUICY for it not to happen.

I like the high standards and complete sentences of PL, so please, lets tone this down.

I go over to LPF to try to get the safety message across. I pushed hard. A small percentage of LPFers can see the forrest for the trees, and have started a culture of safety. Too bad they want it to be goggle based, and cost less then 20$, but that is all they know.


I'm very happy to answer intelligent (and not so intelligent) newbie questions. But I don't need PL to become 90% youth drama with "Texting" feeds.

I'm very happy if youngsters come here to learn, and they will probably pick up on the mature culture here real fast.

And Bob, I agree, there is more to lasers then "Milliwatts", but you can see the real disconnect between buying a pointer and a potential engineering career.

The sad part is, there are only a few people who will speak to the LPF crowd about real physics, real engineering, and answer their questions. Its a real disconnect, and its sad.

Just ask Shirley Sherrod about viral marketing and viral video. The fact that so many people blew 200$ in a millisecond impulse buy, is scary. I'm not going to debate Shirley here, but what happened to her is going to be seen more and more in our future. Internet some how encourages "Impulse".

I agree. Another reason for my passion about the unfairness of the administration of the place. Experience shows up there and is literally pushed out by ignorant bullies standing near the door. So absolutely unnecessary. So shortsighted. Mostly because so few care enough, or have the respect to write simple sentences, much less the ability to identify the subject of them. What's the literacy level of 17 year olds these days? Raised on Ritalin and Twitter?

Social trends are moving to kids standing around in groups, with participation in any group event, ie sports, drama club, chess club, intermural sports, way, way, down. Visual learners are thriving, but auditory and tactile learners are having big problems in the digital society. They also see strong signs of loss of gender identity in girls.

...Rapid digital communications are causing social stress in adolescents, especially among young girls, since now a comment goes statewide/nationwide in seconds, and is not limited to her immediate peers. Mistakes and social gaffs are easily found with search engines, meaning the day you wore a orange skirt with paisley and had a bad hair day reappears any time a "bully" wants it.

...We worked with 20 somethings on a recent gig, and the mis-communications caused by constant texting/emailing endangered the success of the mission. It causes anxiety that was not needed in field work. As we drove across town, the lack of patience was appalling. Dropping out of the comms loop appeared as instant catastrophic failure to them. Yet the rate of communication expected slowed any progress. Too many cooks spoiled the soup.
