No. If you're getting yellow, you either have Krypton in the tube, or you've got some other gas contamination in there. Argon doesn't lase yellow. Period.

Yes. It's an excimer laser and it lases in the UV spectrum. They're used for LASIK eye surgery, among other things.

Don't confuse the bright line spectra with the lasing lines. Remember that it's the Ar+2 ion that lases. That is, you have to strip two electrons completly off the atom before it will lase. The bright-line spectra arises from simple electron exitation of the base atom, but you can't get a population inversion that way. (By the time you've pumped enough engergy into the gas to get a population inversion, you've also created an abundance of Ar+2 ions, and it's these ions that undergo stimulated emission.)

For the most part Buffo is right, it is NOT a standard line.

However, in a special lab setup:

Normal visible AR is AR(II+) Ion, so for yellow, you have to knock off a extra electron, just like a UV Argon. Which means driving the tube to near meltdown to get it, or having a very long tube, driven very hard.

Yes, Xenon lases, however unless pulsed, it tends to rip the tube apart from the heavier ion mass. It has massive gain in the green, blue and violet, plus red and yellow weak lines.

Ah now I think Im starting to get my head around the inner workings of how the ions work and I found it really awesome of how it all comes together to make the amazing colors
I still say out of all the ions Ive messed with the mixed gas has to be the best!!
I was bummed out when I got my omnichrome 643 that was DOA... But I do have the optics so it wasnt a total loss... Anyone want to buy some optics..lol!!

'Over-all' - hands-down, the Spectra Physics 168 (imho..)... I'd bet it would have been 'Spocks' choice'...

However, for 'road-gigging'-ruggedness / durability, the Coherent Purelight is nothing to shake a stick-at...

I have to say the spectras are a work of art to see, the 2 sp 165s are just beautiful!!!
and they seem to be lighter than the coherant thou..
