He did say the 1MW was a "GUESS"... not a fact...

I can't see the big difference between him selling that one item to
a member of LPF...
In all honesty there are quite a few LPF members selling 1 Watt working
Lasers to any "noob" with the $$$. No-one is doing a background check
on the buyers Laser Safety know how....

EDIT: On a estimate, How powerful can the back reflections Be? If you hit a obviously reflective surface. The thing is, that you have to be very close to the impact point anyways "the way it's designed".

Now how strong are fully defused reflections. Being such high power I imagine that they would be pretty strong as well...

Anyone have a idea? Obviously he doesn't....

I see it as a piece of very technologically advanced artwork.
*if* if the creator built it from scratch, and machined,milled and pressed/stamped all the metalwork himself,then I have alot of respect for his skills & deserves to hold,fire and own a class 4 Q switched laser system.
However if hes just a yahoo knownothing that slapped a SS1 yag into a *toys R us plastic toy gun then I would have second thoughts.

No disrespect was intended by this post, but something disturbs me when people post material such as this on the net, I'm not sure what thier motivation is; hopefully purely scientific..

I hope the chap has bought himself some goggles, and does aim it at living creatures.


But then to be honest the whole idea of putting something like this into a "pistol" shaped host, and then releasing videos of it bursting baloons and blowing holes through razor blades scares me and only adds to the already bad impression of Lasers the public and governement have.

I just don't want to see what is otherwise a interesting bit of kit, give forth to even more bad news for the Laserist community at large.

While the handheld gun thing does seem kinda kiddish, I think swatting a fly with a handheld YAG would be pretty cool. Even if it is a SSY1 head, he would have had to put some thought into the battery powered PFN and trigger. Getting it all to nicely fit in a handheld device does deserve some credit. More than the average pointer jockey. I can agree that this shouldn't be offered or sold to some rich kid that convinces daddy to buy him one.

I think some of my frustration comes from the shitty comments I got on my SS ruby laser YouTube video that I pulled down due to all the shitty comments. I later learned that most YouTube viewers are morons anyway and I like my check from Google every month.

The problem lies with the extreme danger of what's hes built and what you've bought, which I don't think neither or you fully appreciate.

It isn't something that requires a mirror to do damge at those powers, any glossy surface could potentially cause damaging back reflections to either yourself or to someone innocent off to the sides or even in the street if the reflections passed through a window.

At potentially hundreds of watts of CW equivolent, that is one very very dangerous laser to be playing around with especially as being handheld it neither has a stable base or careful control of the direction in which it is pointed.

Maybe the comments made by whoever made them weren't the most constructive, but appreciate what you have here. it isn't a toy, its very very dangerous system with little control over where it projects or reflects, this side of it being used in a matt black room with no surfaces.

Yeah your right. You paid 1000$ for a "Toy Gun" Looking YAG and you didn't get it to show it to people just yourself.... And you already have other units... So playing with the YAG's by your self was so entertaining you wanted it in a "Toy" Gun" to play by your self?

Are they selling 1 watt CW lasers, or pulsed lasers that output an invisible beam that can reach a killowatt of peak power during the pulse?

That's the difference. This isn't anything like selling someone a 1 watt 445 laser. This thing is pulsed, and the beam is invisible. The human eye has no pain or aversion response to IR. So if you get nailed with a stray reflection from this thing (or even from a particularly strong specular reflection), you WON'T FEEL IT. And in all likelihood, you won't notice the blind spot either, because your brain will map around it fairly quickly.

No, it will take several hits before you suddenly realize that a large portion of your visual field is missing. But by then it's too late.

This is why people are jumping all over the guy. Not because he's selling a class IV laser, but because he's selling one of the most dangerous types of class IV lasers (plused IR) while clearly demonstrating that he doesn't have the knowledge needed to protect himself or the buyer. (He can't even calculate the peak pulse power correctly.)

As far as his "craftsmanship" skills are concerned, it appears that he bought a plastic toy gun and gutted it. Anyone with a dremel and a free weekend can do that. I'd be more impressed if he was smart enough to realize just how dangerous this project really is. For one, there's no way he should be calling this a "toy"....
