He meant it exactly the way I took it. He's king of the short answer post, unless of course he's asking a question of his own.

My point is that no one should complain about having to repeat themselves. The search engine here is terminally broken, mostly due to the corrupt indexes that were created when the forum software was migrated from PHPBB to VBulletin, and then again when Vbulletin was upgraded from 3.5 to 4.0. So people frequently can't find the answers they need even when they take the time to search for them before they post.

These problems are not likely to go away soon, and even though you can sometimes get good results by searching through Google, it's still not a perfect solution. Thus, people sometimes have to repeat themselves, or at least post links back to previous posts, in order to answer questions. Most senior members understand this, but evidently Andy seems to think he's above all that.

    Default 640 diodes

@ andy who gave you price of £120 for 640 diodes

    i only paid £80 each

@dnar did you get what i ment about the pbs cubes
When God said “Let there be light” he surely must have meant perfectly coherent light.

Yeah mate. I am already cubing. I am busting my balls to obtain more red power in a smaller beam...... The 640 price is really not sitting well with me.

all this price/performance ratio got me calculating and this is what i found

if we generally accept that 4 640s are equivalent to roughly 12 660s, then the price difference is not that great. yes the diodes themselves are worlds apart in terms of price, but for a 12banger 660 you will need 12 diode mounts, 12 lenses and barrels and 13-14 flex mirror mounts to get the job done, while in a 640 situation all you need is 4 diode mounts and 3 flex mounts (two for mirrors and one for pbs)

put the math together, maybe it is not as bad. maybe the 640 is even cheaper. maybe i have my calculations wrong, but i was expecting loads more. of course the above stands if you use ready made mounts and if you don't have a mill. if you make the parts yourself, 660 is the way to go

    12_660_____________4_640

    12*5=60___diodes___4*100=400
    12*20=240_mounts__4*20=80
    14*15=210_flex_____3*15=45
    12*5=60___barrels__4*5=20
    12*5=60___lenses___4*17=68

    total 12_660=630___total 4_640=613

i was thinking about something else then. for the best beam specs in a quad, you'd better use short fl lenses and stack two side by side and then pbs another two on them. this will give you a beam of 6x6mm. then you can telescope using a ratio 2:1 and still have a divergence less than your blue one

    just some thoughts...

    badger1666 says £80
    Andy says £120

Now LaNeK779 says 100 (although not sure of units here?)

Can someone clarify which diodes we are talking about and best source since I agree with LaNeK779 about this!

    Cheers

well, i had the 6385 642 in mind, the more expensive ones should probably be the isolated case 637 (?)

anyway, the point i am making is that, leaving diodes apart, a 12 build is much more expensive and difficult than a quad. and 4 640 are comparable if not better than 12 660 in terms of "visibility"

and the rough calculation i made shows that maybe the 640 quad is not so expensive after all

ps. for the record, i don't have any 642s and i will try to build a 12 with 660s and "homemade" mounts. but i have arleady found out that manufacturing - metalwork tolerances will make my life difficult

The prices may be comparable for a 12 diode 660nm and a 4 diode 640nm, but the cost of replacement diodes make the 4 diode 640nm setup much more expensive.

Sounds like a challenge... Who has four 640s to send over?
