It would take a real effort to get him there. That means LOTS of people will have to talk to and email him.

Thanks very much Steve for your input. I had assumed your second point, should have figured the first but had not the 3rd and am somewhat surprized about that.

I hope we can find a way to work around these issues. I am sending him links to the these threads and the videos on-line and copies of Adams DVDs for two of the past years plus to the threads concerning having him.

Point #1 can be somewhat be eased with earplugs.

There is not much we can do about his serious responsibilities, except try to arrange the transportation to suit Sam's other commitments.

And while laser displays may not be at the top of his list of interests it still has to be something which he would enjoy seeing.

I knew my chances of being successful were not great before I asked him, but had to try anyway. I also was sure that he had been invited before and that some members were involved with Sam and the website having seen your names linked to your work published there.

Steve...You may remember that last year when I met you, Sam was about the first thing we spoke about.

I am sending Sam links to this thread and and others related to SELEM. My opinion and influence means little compared to those who have posted here. So if he does make it to SELEM the credit for that should not go to me but rather those who already know Sam and the laser community as a whole. I have no soubts that Sam appreciates the kind words an respect that has been expressed. So even if he declines just to have a chance to say thanks as a group will be a good thing. I truly believe that if we combine our efforts we can overcome anything.

here are my messages to and from Dr Sam. Via Ebay(at first) in re to the laserdisc player sliders he has listed at ebay.

    Dear siliconsam,
Hello Dr Sam-you helped me out a few times yrs ago. I met some of yr
friends(Steve most notably)At the SELEM laser meet in Newton NC. anyway
there was a thread on lasers forums about henes and I linked your listing
and used your photo( w/ a credit to you).

I figure I owe you for the help
and this is the least I can do. I wanted to ask if there is anything at
your site about powereing up the x/Y galvos-

However I just thought of something-

would you entertain the thought of attending the next SELEM- as
a honored VIP guest of course- this year will be the biggest ever @ least
30 fullcolor projectors in a private venue.
It is going to happen on Aug 19 to 21st and there will be about 80-100 guys (&a few gals) that are dying to
meet you and say thanks for all you have done for us. If you wanted to stay
overnight I am sure we can cover a room at the Holiday Inn where most of us
will be staying. I(and others) am doing a big spaghetti dinner for all on Friday. I
know Steve (and Adam) has asked you before but... Len

    Dear hakzaw1,
    Hi:
    Thanks for the comments! ;-)]
As far as the X/Y galvo in the slider, it's just a pair of voice coils similar to
a loudspeaker, so a small stereo amp or PC sound output should work. However,
the impedance is rather low - don't recall exactly but I blew a Walkman driving
    them. (Probably wanted 32 ohms.)
    What's the thread?
As far as SELEM, I'll consider it but will probably have to disappoint. Sounds like
fun though especially with the Spaghetti (and gals).
P.S. Give me an email that will work without going through eBay - the members
emails don't seem to work most of the time.
    Cheers!--

Yeah, the SELEM thing sounds really tempting. I don't get to go too many
places where I'd be treated as a laser God. But it is a long haul, around
500 miles? I would need transportation. I don't do that kind of driving.
The real problem may be whether I can be away for 5? days. Anyway, there's
plenty of time to think about it.

So at this point IMHO we should be optimistic. I am more than willing to have Sam stay with us(suite) at the Holiday Inn and Alex(MarioMaster) and a few others have offered possible rides to and from Newton. The meals for Sam should not be a problem that we can't handle. The Holiday Inn provides breakfast and the Friday dinner is covered so maybe we can just 'pass the hat' to cover the other meals and perhaps some gas money for those giving Sam a ride.

I will add more to this as it progresses. I would be grateful for any opinions, suggestions and input on this matter. thanks --Len

    UPDATE EDIT**************

Every new email from Sam gives me hope that we will get him to join us at SELEM. I was wrong about him still teaching at UPenn- he has not been on the faculty for some time. That is good for us, no classes to be at on school days. He resides in SE PA just outside Philly. The more offers for a ride the better. I get the impression, however, that he would rather not have to take a turn at the wheel. I just sent Sam a link to this thread. I have not approached him about being a speaker at SELEM but I think we could count on, at least, a Q&A session and a lot of one-on-one convos. TY to all who have or will be posting your thoughts in this thread.

    BUMP

Many Thanks to all who have posted in this thread- keep the kind words acomin' as Sam has a link to this and the more posts we get the greater chance we will have him at SELEM.

He does have some laser items FS but said he would prolly only bring things that attendees have agreed to buy in advance. So see his 'Classifieds' at SAM'SLASERFAQ or write him about that.

I dont want to put his private email addy out but anyone that needs it can PM me. Personal Emails to Sam about his coming to SELEM would be a very good thing. I will try to find out who his favs are when it comes to Music-- maybe a show can be created just for him. I really would like to see a 'WELCOME SAM to SELEM V' animation in laser lights.

    TY---len

ps ne on another laser forum wrote this... If SAM'SLASER FAQ is the laserists Bible, what does that make Sam?

And I Have never seen an ad there either.

AFAIK the very first Tutorial on extracting and using the Bluray diodes was done on SAM'S(by Les Wright)

You better make it- IIRC the're some coming from your part of the counrty so maybe a share-the -ride can be worked out. I will start a new thread in a few to make that and room-sharing etc a little easier.(if you guys dont mind that is) Caravanning is always a good thing too-nothing worse than a breakdown and they are never as bad when another stops with you. IMO.

didnt that happen to some one last year?

WE NEED MORE POSTS IN THIS THREAD!!!!please.

especially from those fortunate enough to 'know' Sam.( place Not 'Worthy' smiley here)

    Len;

Yeah, we had a couple people with car trouble last year. I know that Keeperx had lots of trouble, and I think MrWilling and MarioMaster both had car issues as well. So caravaning is a good idea.

    Default thx Buffo

I have created a basic Fill-in -the -blanks form that may make networking for SELEM a bit easier when it comes to sharing ride-rooms -caravanning etc- I will post it later today- my goal is to make going to SELEM easier and thus maybe getting some to attend that thought it would be not possible or maybe too expensive.

IMHO SELEM and any LEM for that matter is a priceless experience. I never heard
anyone say it was not worth it. About the only 'complaint', was, that it had to end. Thanks, ADAM so much for adding another day this year. SELEM would surely not be the same w/o you.

Having Laser-Sam at SELEM would be absolutely fantastic! Thanks for all your laser and laser/electronics help through the learning-curve years Mr. Goldwasser. Hope you can make it!
    Sincerely,

    Default BUMP for Dr Sam

T Y Steve for the post--Sam has the link and I will nudge him some more by re-sending it. He tells me that he has little time for forums. laserchat rooms. FB etc and ATM he cannot tell us if he can make it. He says he will let us know asap but that may not be until Aug.

The lodging and his meals are covered and we have a few that may be able to help with his transportation to and from Newton. Back-ups are always a good idea and we do not yet know which days he can give us.

Sam is not too fond of driving so anyone else that can help get him to & from SELEM needs to contact Adam or me. He lives just outside of Philly.

If he agrees, I plan to video some interview time with him as many, including those unable to attend, have lots of questions. IF anyone not attending has things that they always wanted to ask Sam will send them to me , I will include them in my interview. And Yes my first question will prolly be about Sams first laser.

At Sams Laser FAQ there is Sam's Classifieds-- LOTS of classifieds- He is pretty easy to deal with and is always looking for a trade so contact him soon if you want him to bring something for you to SELEM(no big items plz) Get the Yellow HeNe you have always wanted-- he has a few FS.

When you tell someone 'I got this from Sam' you can add 'In person'---WE have not asked him to be a 'Speaker' as , for one thing, we cannot afford to pay him for a speech, but I feel he would agree to a Q&A session. He wrote-- I do not have many opportunities to attend a function where I would be treated as a GOD.---rotfl. Maybe I added a few too many 'Not-Worthy' smilies- but as another put it-- He DID write the Laser Bible so....

I guess that makes Steve, Jon, Leslie et al who have work published at Sams --Disciples-

    -Amen

Well its looking very GOOD right now. So Steve B., you MAY have another chance to thank Sam- this time in person. We are still seeking some who may act as back-up drivers , just in case.

Sam seems very flexible about when he can be picked up and when he needs to get back to Phily. It looks like his lodging and food is covered(sorta- any help with this will be appreciated just see Adam or me at SELEM) Sam has expressed his request to not have to endure any tobacco smoke (n/p) and being safety minded wanted to know that no accidents would happen caused by the mixing of alcohol and photons--lol

ALSO__anyone having or possibly making a laser show to some classical music- that would be nice as it is Sam's fav. 'Star Wars' theme etc may fit the bill. Check Sam's Classifieds in case you want a small item offered there as he can bring some items with him. He will do a Q&A and be available for one on one convos. ATM he will be lodged at the HIE. plz contact me if you can be added to the back-up drivers list.
