Is it Friday that we get the name tags?
Reason I ask is that with all the new guys, I know they will not know many by thier faces.
So unless you are one of them you may not understand how awkward it feels to need to ask and remember who's who;
This is even worse when a new person is TRYING to help helpful during thier first ever set up. Nobody want to be addressed
as 'Hey you' If name tags wont be at SELEM until Fri then n/m. Last year I walkd past attendees and did not say hi or introduce myself and I started a convo with a guy thinking he was one of 'us' but he was not--how awkward was that?
I realize it may be easier to do waiver-shirt-tag all at same time but still, not knowing what needs to be done and at the same time needing to ask'Who are you, again?' makes feels like you are an outsider.
Also could we have a clipboard-notebook -whatever at the front desk-- for arrivals at the HIE to put thier first name-username- room # and cell phone into as we arrive?
Some may want to reach out to see about a room to share or a floor in a room to crash on and having no idea where everbody is would make that hard.
If some one has asked for a ride to the venue, resturant, airport etc. it may make getting together much quicker and easier and friendly.
And as many of us do not know a lot of last names the frontdesk is of no help trying to call somebody as they have us in the system by last name which is something not all will know..it would be a friendly thing to do. I only know the first names of a few.
and most do not know the room numbers until the register.
BTW Sam- Docjohn and I will be in suite 115.
Just some suggestions--not trying to change how things have been done and worked out well in the past, but....hak (Len Henzel)
Wellll anyway there is an easy one to recognize me.. if you see a person with a chrome looking notebook with a background with a blue haired girl.. yeah then you got me.
but yeah i do agree with name tags.
Name tags and lanyards are usually given out on Friday, right after you sign the liability waiver. If you don't show up until Saturday, then you'll have to find Chris (Lazerjock) and get your name tag and lanyard then.
I had considered the possibility of giving out some name tags and lanyards on Thursday to the folks who showed up for the load-in and set-up, but I don't know how well that would work. I'll have to talk to Chris about it first. Bottom line, if you get to the auditorium and see people wearing name tags and lanyards, then go find Chris and get yours.
If you don't know anyone and you feel lost, just grab the nearest person you can find and ask: "Where is Buffo?" I'll be easy to find, and I'll also have 2-way radios for me and a few other key members of the group (including Chris, who has the nametags and lanyards), which should make it easy to get in touch with me... Once you find me, I can get you in touch with Chris so you can get your name tag and lanyard.
Regarding the clipboard with everyone's name on it - I don't have a problem with that, but the hotel might. I'll ask them if they will allow this. (Ordinarily I'm guessing they would say no because of privacy issues, but if you volunteer the information by signing up yourself, I don't see the problem.) Worst case, we can post the information in the Auditorium, and if you want to connect with people later on, just be sure to write down their room number while you're at the venue.

Last year being my first, I was a bit overwhelmed and felt somewhat out of place. However this was put at ease very quick as people just started coming up introducing themselves and talking with me. Thanks Spec, DZ, Platinum, Daedal, Flecom and all the guys i'm forgetting that made me feel like I fit in on first arrival (on the back porch)As the weekend progressed heck just into that first night I had meet many and it was great.
I'm guessing it will be this same thing all over again for me as I am not good with names and faces esp just once a year.,

Sounds good to me- I dont look much diff. from last year except for less hair- more of it gray and a gray beard. I will call Eva and ask if we can have a sign notebook at the frontdesk- but having been a Ramada Inn employee for 7 years I would be very surprized if she said no- the customer is always right. This would save a lot of time trying to find somebody or see if they have gotten there yet. Its not like we are asking for non SELEM folks to sign in or anything-
This way if you sre meeting up the the lobby and are early (or late) it would be EZ to call thier room or cell. I too was greeted and felt at ease right after meeting a few of you.
No way near ready to go..... the last few days have flown by. I have not even left and already have that "what the hell did I forget' feeling.
The pool at the HIE will look damn inviting- here in Tx we have had almost 20 days in a row of 100+. hardly any rain since Feb 14th. The resturants are no longer serving water unless you request it.- no car washing or lawn watering- most places cancelled the fireworks for 7/4.

Hey Len why not list the things you have to have ready on here, so if there's anything missing everyone can help you out.
Sorry for the late reply. I was taking part in my other hobby, flying RC.
I plan to start handing out lanyards as soon as I get there on Thursday. I figure the sooner the better.
Which brings up a good point. I have a fair amount of money tied up in these lanyards and vinyl pouches that the name tags go in and I'm still unemployeed. I will bring it up again as I hand them out.
Please return them to me before you leave.
I plan to reuse them until they just fall apart. I'm leaving Sunday early so I will get Adam to make an announcement before I go. By Sunday we should have a good idea of who everyone is anyway.
Thank you,
Chris
