Default Burning Man and Laser advice

Ok, so the story is I've met someone who runs a sound camp at Burning Man and they have offered to take from the UK to US for it, to run my lasers.

Am I right in thinking that without a variance, the projectors probably wouldn't even make it into the country?

What are the issues here, as I know some of you have done BM previously?

Thanks for anything you can give.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

I recall slicklasers has done some burningman, ask him.

Make sure your projectors can withstand sandstorms or worse !

Since I live here in NV and have been to the man from 1998 to 2004. ANY THING GOES! I have seen 100watt medical converted lasers shot into the air, people, planes etc.

Your main problem will be. If you want to keep your optics alive. Leave it at home. If not, try throwing flour into your laser projector mixed with some alkaline dust and moisture from the morning/alkaline acid from the hot summer 98+ deg heat.

From the 20,000+ people walking on the playa it turns it into a flour like dust.

Bring a throw away laser projector. Like a china one.

If the FCC does not care about 100watt of more pirate radio stations. I am sure the FDA gives a crap less as well.

Just if you go outside the orange fence. Stay off the railroad tracks. Last thing I want to do is run over one you of since one of my runs is on the south side of the black rock desert.

Yes, you will have problems bringing your laser over here.... You would have to hire a Customs Broker, and then make sure your projector is Varianced and meets all the requirements. If you don't want to go that route, and want to still do it, you can rent a laser here and use it for the burn, or pass the gig on to someone else... I am still available...

Pull the lasers out of the projector. Ship them in a different package? Oh wait... Did I just say that out loud.

There are more things to be worried about at BM then lasers. For one, they are starting to set of hydrogen concussion bombs now.

But till you get to BM the U.S. laws will apply and I don't know what customs will do to your projectors.

The only problem is if they catch it, you are in for more trouble than its worth.. We have plenty of LEGAL Lasers here in the US that could be cross rented for the gig...

In a way yes. They have police and EMT out there. The police will arrest you for the normal, doing drugs in their face or other stuff like that. But when it comes to art or what they call art. Anything goes. One year a camp made a roller coaster from wood pallets and other 2x4s. No building code what so ever, no real rules on fire usage. Normal stuff like guns, and explosives are controlled. But they are starting to find ways of building concussion bombs and setting them off.

If you think the FDA will bust your laser projector, you are living in a dream world. Look up the Emerald City, I think it was 2001 or 02. They ran massive power with a 532 laser and light up the sky, flight paths and all. You find more lasers out there now, then ever. Hell they even attempt to blind us on the train. Been hit with lots of lasers while running a freight train out in the black rock.

The FM and AM broadcast band is full of radio stations, and it is public that they are going to broadcast. http://www.k-svert.com/freqs/

The list goes on and on. So if you think audience scanning can hurt people, ask the 30k people at burning man who got blinded? You will get scanned, by just about every cheap, or home build laser out there.

Not saying it is a good ideal, but it takes place.

The event is getting more and more regulated. But for now, it is about as close to free expression of self art or what have you, that the U.S.A can offer.
