Iphone 3GS tether, they aren't really modems like normal. Not sure about the android.
but the thing with iphone is that sending sms from an external source and reading them out from an external source is not possible on iphone.
Nokia's often tend to work, samsungs can work.. I had one that could had worked if i still had it.

the android will tether but I am not sure about how to TX/RX the SMS... I also have an unlocked Sierra Aircard 860 GSM PCMCIA card
