it not just the lava lens tats a pain to get right it the colimation lens, it very sensitive to being absolutly dead center or the beam looks a little squiffy
like in my pic, that said it will look fine scanned ,but i would rather tidy it up a bit first.
i am just a bit miffed that i dont have the time to play any more till monday
there is another option than logs diode mount and thats the one dave has that allows diode movement

but you can believe me whan i say that i don't really care about the physics behind it, i just want it to work!

mr planters's explanation sheds some light of course, i thought that cylinde lenses worked like normal pcx and pcv lenses where (i.e. that the distance between them was fixed)

it seems that we are getting closer and closer. maybe this adjustable mount from logsquared should come in handy in terms of centering the diode

and chris, your experiment shows that it is highly possible that andyf's "mystery optic is most probably a short FL asphere and not some sort of exotic acylindric or grin lens
When God said “Let there be light” he surely must have meant perfectly coherent light.

Yes...the Lava lenses are a PITA to get perfect ( I am sure ALL cylinderical lenses are equal in this regard ): parallelity, distance between lenses, height alignment between PCV and PCX, beam incidence at 90 degree, and beam centered on PCV centre....all must be spot on !!! But it does work !! So...what you are saying Mr. Badger is that the XY movement allowed by Daves' mount will permit the LD to be centered to the collimation optic...to get that spot on !! Good work !!! Thanx !!

I am going to knock out 20 or 30 of the adjustable holders in the next week or two. Also, a 3, 4 and 6 diode combiner kit is in the works. Currently trying to source 638nm waveplates for a good price.

Yes, I have some diode housings that I designed to use with a shorter focal length lens that allow x y movement of the diode.

If there is enough interest ill get a run of these done with the base like the standard mounts

If a FL of < 4mm is needed, then 405-G-1 or 405-G-2 should be OK, BFL= 2.4mm, EFL= 4mm. Should not be a coating issue with G-1, as it is MgF2 single layer coating OK for red. Not G-2, as it is A coating for shorter wavelengths. 650-G-2 should be OK, with BFL= 2.9mm unless we are discussing true/ EFL, and in that case it is 4.56mm for 650-G-2, so I can see why these are not proving effective, and we need a very , very short FL.

Well done Badger, I am glad somebody else is making progress too.

Regarding mounts, I order from ebay some micrometer based stuff exactly for this reason of the tricky alignment.
