One reason that the people over on lpf can overdrive these bitches so hard is that they dont give a shit. If a handheld pointer goes dark they'll just pull another one out of their pocket. I dont that we can exactly do that too easily with projectors lol .
I switched the o-like blue lens out for a 405-g-2 lens tonight and saw the power increase from 400mw to 619mw. So the 38% was near spot on. Gonna let this run over night also through the weekend and check the power in 12 hour intervals. Hopefully it stays pretty stable. This power reading is after the Lens and also after C-lens.
I'll also note the amperage after I shut er down on sunday or if it fails prior.
Also my projector is home use only so i figure if I get 75 hours straight out of it during this test, that will equal many more pj running hours when modulated.

To be honest, but even if it goes for a few hundred hours:
Given the fact these diodes are relatively cheap, it's fairly easy to have a few spares of them on hand in case of a failure during a gig.
Remember lighting techs carry spare lamps ALL OF THE TIME, and they work with lamps which have MTBF's of 500 hours (tungsten halogen), so it's normal to carry spares.
And a spare laser would set you back only 70 bucks, which is spare change when you're running shows for hundreds or thousands of dollars.
If you compare the cost of running hours against the money one diode will make during its (even ridiculously short, like 100h) lifetime, I don't really see the problem. I would even make room for a spare diode inside the projector which could I swap to active in case a diode fails mid-show. (Whether that's more profitable than building dual with a PBS is a different matter though.)
.. which brings us to the point of .. who's going to invent the "quick-swap-perfect-alignment-diode-mount" hehe ..
I ordered my Dr.Lava lenses 14 days ago and no word of pending or shipped or anything.. ?? Anybody else having trouble contacting him? I noticed he's got lots of PMs building up .... ??
Time/ day of failure (and power output at that time if possible) would be my vote .
Stoney3K,
I'm doing just that for a 445 diode build. Putting together a "conventional Dave-diode mount/flex mount/knife edge/wave plate/cube, and I just machined a shallow zero clearance slot for each diode mount. I then have one extra mount, boxed separately and with a diode and lens already installed. I assume there will need to be some fine alignment, but this should speed the replacement when needed.
