OK-- so now what .. a new thread for the P73 ?? This one had 670 posts and a hellovva lot of work and research involved. Hopefully a lot of that can be rolled over to this new diode/

Hey Steve !!! Dunno ??? Still not quite there on the G71 !!! VERY CLOSE !! Waiting on higher xx glass...Will report as soon as I can test !! The results on the P73 over at LPF are somewhat lower on PO vs current than I would have predicted !! But perhaps with more set-ups...we will see !! As far as the P73 promise...I suppose it remains unclear what the emitter size is.....so the ultimate utillity is also in question ?? If the G71 emitter size = P73 size....then possibly the P73 will be prefered to the G71...depends on cost too !!!
On an unrelated issue...I am now of the opinion that the adjustable mount from Dave/LSP will do the job just fine for mounting and optically alignment of the G71...and a more complicated approach is likely overkill..I DO think it needs allittle more mass....so see pics as to how I will use it !! It needs a spacer anyway to get the beam height up to 19mm....so a little brass plate to get more vertical...there ya go...Krikies M8 !!!!

More mass? I don't understand what you mean?
I doubt Dave ever thought the mount wouldn't be mounted to some sort of base plate. The surface area of the contacting surface is plenty big enough for good heat flow.
Looks promising on the P73's. The datasheets do rate the operating temps on the P73 as lower than the 71. But hell the operating temp on the 445's is only 30 deg C IIRC. Im excited to see how they pan out.
LS...Well...yes....of course the LSP units were designed to be mounted to a baseplate. I remain of the opinion that it is a good thing to pull heat away from LD...and increased mass acts to pull more heat away from the LD..Equalibrium will occur..as long as that mass is also dumping its heat energy to the surrounding air....and the surrounding air is exchanged with cooler ambient temp air. The Second Law of Thermodynamics Must be served.....then again.....I could be FOS !!! It HAS happened B4 !!! BEAM

I would not worry too much about optimizing mass/surface area yet. First, set up an actual working diode/lens/correcting and combining optic system. Optimize this by working out the defects so that you feel you can actually use this module. Then if you want to improve temp. performance, you can always add a radiator or fan etc. If your pretty sure you want to go the active cooling route then maybe the spacer could be a TEC or equal to the dimensions of an available TEC for later incorporation.
I have some shorter focal length lenses and M9, 0.5 lens retainers coming![]()

dave, will that be shorter than the 2.9 FL ??
"its called character briggs..."
Shorter FL = worse divergence? Or is that corrected by the new cyl lens setup?
DTR, do you know where the people over on LPF are getting the P73 diodes? I'm ready to order 1 to experiment with. It looks like they're having good luck with them over there and the emitter appears very similar in size. They are reporting that they are stable outputting over 900mW per diode. This is sounding very good. I know this is off-topic for the G71 thread but I dont know where to put it .. Maybe have to start a new thread .. as if we don't have enough threads here already on the mitsu red diodes, heh ..

Might need to make a sub forum dedicated to reds...![]()

Yeah, I think so Aaron! We'll call it "The mass muckity-muck-fck-up'ed-red-conglomerate-which-side-is-up-thread" . Would that work for everyone? heh . . j/k ..
