You could probably win that $1000 X-prize with that! Very nice, CD!

Thanx...Aaron/Steve....Thanx also to P1t8ull....who got me into maching !!! It is really a great deal of satisfaction !!! And No...I really need a small used lathe....I think Polishedball has a few...doing ANY machining on round stock is VERY tricky without one !!!!! Doable...but a major PITA !! Yes...I think this mount will really help with the 2mm collimation lens alignment...we will see shortly...I know the 2.9mm lens is challenging to align...so...I imagine the 2.0mm will be even more a challenge...we will see. I will likely use three (3) more of these in my quad red set-up...stay tuned.....BEAM

Hey CD a rotary mill table with a chuck in it would serve you
    Well I'm machining round stock

    Default Latest Quad Red iteration

Well....YES...I want to experiment with the all the bits...ASAP...I have done a CAD drawing of the most recent iteration...see attached....using the LDALM V4 adjustable mounts, 6X Cylinderical lenses and the LSP 2mm fL Collimation lenses. It is the way I am going to proceede....I will start with a dual....see how that goes....and if all goes well...add another two LD's to complete a quad. We will see what happens. I will post on the dual asap ( when I have all the bits and have machined the second LDALM V4....BEAM

Note: the footprint of the Quad set-up is 197.5mm x 160 mm

    To whom it may concern..

Starting my quad builds I did some quick toss it up there measurements with Dave’s 2mm FL collimators and the lava cylinders.

    Beam specs after correction:
    Aperture beam size: ≈ 4 x 2mm
    Farfield beam size @ 11m: ≈ 17 x 5mm
    Divergence: = 1.18mrad
    Optical efficiency = 88.85% (raw input = 305mW @ 400mA, output 271mW) 11.15% total loss
    Distance Coli/1st cylinder = 35mm

This can probably be tweaked to 1mrad with the distance Coli to 1st cylinder @ 35mm, this distance greatly effects beam size at the aperture and divergence.
For my needs, no more than 4mm x 4mm..

Thanks for that SF! Looking good. This means that at 100 feet the spot size will be about 1/2 a thumb length

    Hi Solarfire,

how do you measure beam size?
When I measure your far field image with imageJ under the asumption that your camera is linear and that the squares are 1mm I measure 41mm 1/e^2 slow axis beam size, see attached screenshot.
The theoretical limit with the lens combination and emitter size of this diode is 31mm so your result is still improvable ~30% using better lenses. This then corresponds to2.8mrad full ange 1/e^2 divergence.
Ot to put it in other words: 1. Beam parameter product is a constant 2. With their BPP this diodes are still not very usable for showlaser use.
Sorry to be so negative here, but it always kicks me how much it is tried to beat the laws of physics here. I am watching this thread the whole time and to be honest: this diode is not the holy grail and will never be. In terms of Power/BPP a knife edge setup with single mode diodes is still a factor of 3 or so superior and easier from the optics as well.

    Best

i think you will see with a bit of searching, that solarfire is the exact opposite of a guy trying to beat the laws of physics...
