Looking good K. You need 3 hands

I had a thought.. a slab of aluminum, brass or copper milled to the exact dimension "W" needed for spacing a G71 and the 2mm Daves lens . Glue the LD in place w/ thermal epoxy, scootch the lens around to dead center, glue it in and bang. Set.. no fiddling, no axis adjustments .. should stay rock-solid. Just got to get that dimension and give it to a machine shop ..

Good idea but but if the diode dies then depending on how you had it held in it could be a pain to get it out.
So to have something built kinda like what dave made but no m9 thread so the diode is held in by a plate.
Also im not sure that this would work for all diodes you can get some weird ones.

Usually I just chip the epoxy loose with a sharp flathead screwdriver and remove the component.. if it's a dead diode i dont care if I damage it .. I've done that before with LDs and a few fs mirrors .. without cracking them .. well, maybe a chip or 2
Yeh.. good idea.. a plate..nice thought!

-edit- just read your last edit-- :]

Yeah that had crossed my mind, if the emitter is not exactly in the same place on all the diodes .. hmmm ...

I think the focus adjustment for 2mm lenses not to mention the requirement for absolute centration of the lens in its housing will be too demanding. Tweaking the setup after installation is a useful feature. I don't think this will be better than the current setup. But, It might be worth a try...only way to know.

Ok, I'll try it Actually I've already done it with a dual 445 (epoxied the lenses and the LDs into place and haven't had a problem yet) .. I guess until the epoxy gets old and starts a-crack-in' .. but wtf .. in 10 years we'll all have 10000mw yellow and green diodes so .. wheeeeeeee !!!

Well i kinda had an idea to make my own lens holder that would center itself over the diode can but the tolerances would have to be very tight and it might stress the diode can and cause some problems.
I think we would not have this many problems if we had a very high tolerance threaded diode holder and lens holder, the tolerances to be around 0.06 mm i think if we were able to get them made like that these problems would be gone, but then comes to price for having something like that.

Post #839? How do you keep track of this? Anyway, any results with that holder? Does it make a difference? Have you made any mods? It sure looks nice!
