Those are nice beams but that price is just a bit to high even for their 800mw, 870$ ouch
i build my own 700-900mw greens for around 390$ But i get a beam of around 2mm and 1.5 mRad. so when i expand the beam a bit i can get very close to the 635nm red setup.
Maybe im just cheap.

Thats the whole point of it, cost. This all started with the cheap blue diodes where people including me got crazy about and started to trade beam quality for cost. Now the blue are already bad beam quality while these reds are even worse a factor of 2. At blue you can trade quite some power for beam quality since one single diode delivers over 1W. But if you trade power for quality with this diodes you are already at the power level of a nice single mode diode.
I also want a nice projector for a resonable price, but not "as cheap as possible" because that will definitly lower the beam quality below my expectations of a good beam. Your "crazy expensive" is still the cheapest way to get a beam quality which satisfies my expectations. I also know some professional companys which do not use blue diodes because they wan't to deliver optimum quality even for beam shows (and still have very reasonable projector prices by the way). If you want to make a beam show in a 30m long hall you will also start to look for beam quality.

You say for a show 30m long i will start looking into better beams, but i think you forgot about more power.
Your setup there with the 4 (maybe 250mw long life or 500mw short life) 659nm diodes plus 2 150mw 635nm diodes do not have alot to stand on in terms of brightness vs a 2W 635nm setup, and once i get my hands on the 500mw diodes i plan on a 4W setup.
With so much more power even at 30m my beams would still be much brighter.
Also the solution we are using is the best cost effective one.
There is still some testing for another solution that should get the mrad below 0.85 but it will add about 50$ extra per diode.
Also for almost all shows the audience only care's about how bright the beams look, they cant even notice that one is tighter once the scanners start swinging it all comes down to swinging the brightest beam.
I love all the solutions and i am sad to say we are losing the super tight beams but when you can get this much power its hard to look at the LOC's and even think of using them.
I would hate to have to replace a diode every other show.

andythemechanics setup would be very ok in a small hall but there is a point to know, if you have a super low divergence you can use a far lower power system. Beam quality is the most important consideration but on the other hand when doing outside shows many other factors come into play. In the end high power compensates for the requirement of an large outdoor show, hiigh power comes into another league. There are very few solutions for high power with low divergence unless of course use Coherent.
On a safety point, huge power and extremely low divergence is dangerous. 0.5rad at 2 watts is significantly more dangerous than 1mrad at 2watts.
