I'm running the P73 in my latest quads at 1A each. Passive cooling but lots of nice big bits of ally underneath them.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

At only $32 a pop (63193).....well....inexpensive enough !!.....Mr. P....perhaps you can throw in here....and do show a few shots using the Corsair Water cooling unit !!!
I thought The Oclaro 700mW diode I compared in this video is the one you are describing. No?

Hmmm ??? Mr.P.....Well the Oclaro 700mW = HL63193 Diode....so yes ....that is the diode I believe to be ever so slightly improved over the P73

My set-up used to compare the two diodes was the 2mmEFL Collimation lens from LSP...and a set of 6X magnification Cylindrical lenses...fairly standard stuff !!

All I can say is....for the diodes I compared....the Oclaro 700mW ( HL63193 ) delivered slightly less wing presentation !! Perhaps my set up gave the Oclaro 700mW a slight edge ??? Dunno ???

Great video BTW....I do remember it now !!!....And....it could be we have some variations in the individual diodes we have tested ??? A sample population of one (1) surly could introduce variation !!!

I doubt that many have spent the hours that we have looking at these diodes....and my optical area for testing is at least one order of magnitude less....er....ah...." polished " than your lab !!! but....In my mind....the Oclaro is still superior. Jors agrees with you....Dunno ???...... Lot'sa variables here !!!

What we really need is a new..."Kick-Ass" Red !!!!

Yes, I'm not interested in a tempest in a teapot. I'm setting up to run the tests on the blue tomorrow. If it proves to be anything like I believe it might then I don't really care about the other colors. At least not until they evolve to be worth the effort. I would rather put a bunch of these blues in a single color module and produce a beam at a whole new level of power. crazy power, more power than a LS in a much tighter beam. THAT is exciting again.

I am waiting on Dave stuff so I can test both 2mm and G20's with both Oclaro and Mitsu diodes Click image for larger version.

This has some potential as I'm sure there is still some residual spherical aberration present no matter how you order the simple cylinder lenses.

You and me both. I've just recently got serious about learning more about optics and am very inspired by planters work over the last couple of years.
I've beer doing rudamentry fiddling with cylinder correction of P73. I'd like to try using round cylinders instead of rectangular so I can make mounts that make it easier to align the optics train and keep the Plano faces perpendicular to the beam axis.
I've seen a couple of people using 1/2" round cylinders and 1/2" Plano convex for the spacial filter telescope.

@planters. You use mostly 25mm optics, what are the trade offs. I'm assuming it's a bit easier to see what's happening. Of course you need extra space, which you have with your larger layout.

I would prefer to use 1/2" lenses. Is the any disadvantage to the smaller diameter lenses?

Also regarding focal length of cylinders, what advantage does -50 and 100mm have over -6 and 24? Does it make things easier to align and haves better depth of field, the same way longer focal length PCX telescope lenses make it easier to position the spacial filter?

    Thanks Kit

I believe that the precision that the optics can be adjusted to is a significant component of the overall quality. 1/2" lenses are substantially harder to align (for me). Remember that the OD of the lens does not account for the clear aperture which becomes more significant as the OD decreases. Furthermore, it is easier to clean a larger surface because it is hard to clean the entire clear aperture because of interference with retaining rings, glue etc.

Along the same lines, longer FL lenses are more tolerant of tip, tilt and spacing errors and the effect is proportional to the FL squared. You are correct that this effect applies to the cylinders and the telescope.
