Default (Non-Laser Related) Sun StorEdge L1000 Tape Drive Library

    Hello there!
I know this isn't remotely close to being laser related, but I am making some space for some new toys, so a few things have to go; this being one of them.

It will be going on eBay in the next day or two; however I thought I'd offer it here first should anyone want it to fiddle with.

It is a great machine; everyone should have one!
If you are the sort of person who likes watching the washing machine go round, then this is the storage solution for you!

If you are interested, please make me a reasonable offer - all entertained, it needs to go.
UK Collection or delivery to Surfleet only thanks.

Up for sale is a Sun StorEdge L1000 tape drive library. The unit is in great condition and works perfectly.

This is the stand-alone, (non-rackmounted) 4 drive model, complete with wheeled base.
The tape library can hold up to 30 tapes, and can read and write up to 4 simultaneously via the DLT-7000 drives. With each DLT IV tape holding 40GB each, this library is capable of over 1TB backups. The entire robot gripper mechanism and barcode reader is in good working order and functions well.

The unit can be controlled via the large touchscreen graphic LCD on the front, or through SCSI commands from the backup software e.g. Veritas backup or Amanda backup.

The interface to the library is through 5 Ultra Fast Wide SCSI connectors; 1 for each tape drive and 1 for the robotics controller. To give maximum throughput, it is recommended to run the library from a dual port host card and daisy-chain two tape drives from one SCSI line, and the remaining two and robotics controller from the other. Although there is nothing to stop you from driving all five from 1 host port (transfer speed will be bandwidth limited).

    • A significant amount of documentation will be supplied with the machine. Everything from user manuals to service manuals, and much more; supplied on a CD.
    • A working Adaptec AHA-2944 Ultra Wide SCSI PCI card will be included with the sale.
    • Two HVD Ultra Wide 68 pin SCSI cables will be included (one short, one long).
    • The unit already has two short Sun SCSI cables daisy-chaining each pair of tape drives.
    • Around 10 DLT IV tapes will be included, as well as 2 cleaning cartridges with some life left in them.

    Dimensions of the machine: 440 x 500 x 720mm
The unit weighs around 41kg (non-packaged), so collection preferred, or you can arrange your own courier.

I took the cover off of it and snapped a video of it booting up:

That might be something for hobbybob. He organizes lan-parties and storage is very nessesary at those gigs. Send him a PM and he might can pick it up when visiting the UKLEM when he is interested.
