    Thumbs up Congrats!... :)

    Hey Kit -

That's the spirit, m8! ..and I know you're gonna just *love* the front-side access convergence-controls.. that, just about more than anything, is what sold us on their systems... plus, yes, the brilliant-scheme for thermal-management they came up with, but - imho, the ability to 'spank' your convergence, w/O having to open anything, onsite / just-before a show, is the tipping-point vs the 'Kv-line'.. (...all due-respect... ...And @rçtĝ$ can't even enter that-'contest'...

..and yeah, the C-8 is a bit 'large', but the Red power, especially, is awesome... I'd bet, though, that you'd scarcely notice any difference between a 6 and an 8, anyway... perhaps only for the subtlest of fx, ie: rasters / shading, etc... I'm sure you and Wayne will tear it up, proper...

RE: the '5 W limit'... give it time.. perhaps they'll 'relax' that for Pro-shows, in-time.. ie: NYS (New York State) over here in Gringolandia, *still* has their laser-show Regs stating a '5 watt limit'.. yeah, right, Later taco... So, perhaps, in time, they'll relax about that...

RE: VCSELs - you'll really see a difference in reduced Green 'trail-offs', ie: at the ends of letters / lines, etc - especially with 'tough' colors, like 'grey'... and, too, with rasters, etc - you'll be impressed.. Good overview article about the whys / wherefores / advantages... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertica...emitting_laser

Anyhoo, cheers to you and Wayne, and... let's see some beam-shots!!!

    Hey Jon,

I'm very happy with it's build and design. Most of my buying decisions have been heavily influenced by your advice and it hasn't failed me yet I had bought some vertical Newport 1/2" mounts for beam steering when I was going to use separate modules but this is the ultimate. I'll use them when I build my satellites to achieve a similar convenience.

Robert sent me some of the Graftech Hitherm graphite thermal interface material they use and it's great stuff.

Hopefully I should have beam shots in the first week of the new year.

Thanks for helping us whippersnappers out Jon. Our laser apprenticeships are much less painful thanks to you and the other elders who help us.

    Cheers Mate!
    Kit

Yeah, following the old Japanese-wisdom-influenced, 'measure twice, cut once', has rarely failed me, either.. Do your 'homework', choose wisely... but then make a decision and cut hard!

...Here's a nice 'beamshot' fer ya, meantime:

ID:	29552 (..albeit, that's the C-8, of course...) You can do cool stuff like this with it:

..this was over a 730' throw (!) and the only reason it 'looks blurry' is cause I had to zoom-in to fill the frame, due to the distance, and only brought a crappy little Sony digi-cam....plus, it was just a tad bit windy up on the roof, there...

..Output, even at that distance, was razor-sharp - and - we were only using Blue and a touch of Green - zero Red, cause the Client wanted only cyan-ish for their logo... ..Point is, this wasn't even near 'full-power', so, I suspect you will be very-happy with your investment, and 'good-call' on going for the 6, vs maybe 'over-stretching' for an 8...

..and yeah - take Wayne's good advice - insure that puppy, asap!

MMM, now that is laser porn

That power supply is especially interesting.. looks like its been made up of a few Vicor modules, which is equally as porn

[QUOTE=kitatit;217586I'm no authority on laser cavity mechanics. They are still DPSS but have a longer V shaped cavity that gives more stable operation and they modulate much better.
    [/QUOTE]

If i understand correctly, its very similar to a L-Fold design. Not a all inline cavity design like 90% of Chinese DPSS..

Hey kit that’s an awesome piece of equipment you got there. You must have been a really good boy this year? Let me guess, are you going to point this at some EMS7000s, IRISColorSafe?
No.. but seriously, you know it’s better to give than to receive don’t you? So if you need someone to give too, I would offer myself to take this load off of you dude!

    You're close, m8... ...More like a diode pumping a VCSEL-design... it's pretty incestuous...

...here's a couple nice images of better-detail on the VCSEL... (..pretty-wild, eh Kit? and the 'differences' between the v-cav and the edge-emitters... note the inherently-circular beam of the VCSEL..

..now, as-to 'how is it 'faster'?, here's where the VCSEL's true promise may come-in - since, by varying the 'length of the resonator', if you will - the µm's-thick cavity, there, you can vary the wavelength, right inside the chip! In fact, they're doing true direct-green right now, this way, but still don't have it quite able to sustain CW-operation, much-less anything of hi-power - seems we're a bit-off from true direct-green yet...

..however, they do have commercially-available high-power 1064nm VCSEL array-packages, and, iirc, they direct-pump a PPLN (Lithium-niobate) xtal - right in the same package - for SHG to green... that would certainly explain the 'time savings' from pumping a 1064 xtal with 808 (..which, you can also-do, all-inside a tiny VCSEL-pumped package..) for faster modulation... But, I'll admit I don't know exactly which type / scheme they're using in the RGB... I'd love to find-out.. ..whatever it is, it works!

Ultimately, we'll have a VCSEL direct-green, at high-power... for now, you can go OPSL, if you've got the wallet... *sigh*

Sorry for littering your post all-up with pix, Kit, but I figured you might be interested in seeing what hi-tech you've got in yer hands, there.. ..what I wanna know is - how the *smack* do these guys come up with these ideas??? ie: http://www.nature.com/nphoton/journa...011.210-f1.jpg - ..I mean, what - was some OE just sitting there at his kitchen table one morning, staring at his coffee-mug... and then, whammo, 'Eureka! I've got it!'...

Well, that's all about scientists/researchers... Researchers who are searching, we find a lot of them! But researchers who are finding, that's another story... hehe.

This being said Nice explanation about V-technolgy, thanks!
I just still don't figure how Coherent can put these V-cavity inside their not-wide-at-all OPSL heads, smaller than any other comparable powered dpss... Any inside-pics maybe?

PS - Kit, here's a good link for more tech-info about the V-cav's, in general / some cool other-apps... http://princetonoptronics.com/techno...chnology.php#2 ...amazing... 230W, CW, off a chip that could swim on a postage-stamp! ..And I'd sure like to see 6W of 480nm Blue...

..Anyhoo, sorry for the Jon-mayhem in yer thread.. Back to the RGB6-channel!

    ciao..

maybe i just had too much to drink, being christmass and all, but all i can think of even after jon's explanations of Vfold (which i can't bear to read at the moment), is just hideous, ludicrous things, verging on the edge of hard core porn stuff... V fold huh??? maybe they could have thought of a better name if you follow my line of thinking or i just have a dirty mind

just envious i think, i sure hope you enjoy the best out of your new module kit, after all your dream coming true had something to do with one of my own dreams coming true too

a huge cheers mate, make the most out of that engineering wonder you hold. all i can think of is WELL DONE!!
