Default little greenie in varianced projector?

I've been reading up on a lot of the requirements to get a homemade projector varianced but I am still left wondering about one aspect. The green I'm using is a little 150mW Chinese pointer module that will be run by DrLava's Flexmod. Does anyone see an issue with me using the little green module? Has anyone ever got an accession number for a projector with one in it? I don't see any reason it should cause any problems, other than quality, but I can't afford a legitimate laser at this point so I'm hoping I can get away with this for now.

I can't speak for the US, but I don't see why it would matter. AFAIC the emphasis is on safety. Here in Australia it's all about Electric Safety, and Eye Safety. Key safety features such as E-Stop, shutters, stray beams, signage etc. are what count.

Yes, those are the things I've been reading most about but for some reason I had this gut feeling that trying to use a cheap little Chinese module would give me trouble. Thanks for the reassurance!

I don't think the source of your parts matters all that much. Like DNar says it's about safety. The paperwork you submit to the FDA should convey that you are not some idiot that is going to end up blinding people or burning a club down.

I'm no expert on variances, but it would seem to me that all oem modules and anything and everything else in an enclosed projector should be covered under a variance as a single laser unit; the projector.

Agreed. I don't believe the country of origion of the diode makes as much of an issue as the specs and the safety of the device. It's not like there are a plethora of American companies making lasers. Hell... there isn't much of anything we make anymore.

you variance the "product" aka the projector not the individual lasers

its the end product that receives a variance. not the individual components. You can have a toaster oven inside with a star wars light saber and as long as the final product satisfies all safety regulations you can receive a variance on it.

Wow if you had both the sabre and the toaster oven in the projector you could cook dinner, have a lightshow and fight off baddies all at the same time .

Ha ha ha!!! Thanks for the replies guys I'm going to keep trekking forward with this build but in the mean time, anyone have a 1-2W RGB that would be relatively easy to variance for under $2K? I'm trying to get the ball rolling on doing shows but my build is taking forever. Just throwing that out there. Thanks again!

    Cheers,
    -Luke
