    Default Scientists Behaving Badly

I'm running through old books today and came across this picture of a scientist behaving badly with an argon laser beam. It's from an article in the December 1966 National Geographic. The next page shows Art Schawlow popping a balloon in a balloon with a ruby laser mounted in a plastic '60s ray gun with a focusing lens at the nose.

Are you sure that is not you in the picture Bob. I know it isn't. Thanks for the picture.

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

There's a few similar pics showing laser beams and bunny rabbits but I think posting those will get be tagged as a baby seal clubber.

Here's another one showing a Raytheon scientist demonstrating BIG balloon poppin' with their model LH-3 nitrogen cooled ruby laser system from 1961. This is from the March 1964 Popular Mechanics article titled "Here's Why Those Do-Everything Lasers Don't - Yet". Obviously made to be a travelin' man's laser! 20J output from that beast.
