I just had a talk with the sales rep of that other big laser company. If you like white light and can't afford OPSL, you had better scarf up your whitelight ion systems now, and refurb the tubes... Yep, they just discontinued medium and large frame ION.
Steve
You mean, 'tech-wise'? No, I am confident the OPSLs will be quite 'good-enough'.. I mean, they're not as-fast as a PCAOM, but... much closer than DPSS, even better than VCSELs, which - there are not 6-7 lines available-of..Nor, with Diodes... (direct green, (and I mean, ONE CHIP, like our blues and reds, not any sort of OPO / DPSS..) direct yellow, direct cyan? not yet...) So, OPSL appears to-be the current 'best hope' for replacing an 11-line Ion, with fast-PCAOM color-mod..
..The trouble for us, is, that with what it would 'take' for us to completely-replace what *one* 11-line WL Ion enables? I'd need 1x RYGB 'engine', and at *least* one other, preferably an RYGCB, for the optical-fx section / fx-rail.. That's 9 OPSL heads / drivers / tec-sets / drivers, etc... That's $135 G's at 'conservative' pricing... if - IF - somehow I could-negotiate $10k a head? (prolly a fat-chance..) Again, still over $95K, all-in.. for one projector..
..For the '2 scan-channel' PJs, or a 'CSL'? I'd need 2x RYGB engines, + at *least* one RYGCB, prolly better to have 2.. so, that's 13 OPSL heads / kit, at a min. ...all to replace the One ion-head...
Could we 'hobble-together' the 'engines' we need to make out of a combo of diode / dpss (yellow) / VCSELs vs going to such high-cost OPSLs? Possibly, especially, since we don't really need the super-hi powers, that the OPSLs afford (..don't need anywhere *near* 5W of Yellow!) but they don't exactly sell a 'lower-power for lower-cost' version.. all or nothin..But, that 'calico-cat' approach will be frought with HOURS of frustrating combination-schemes, color-correction boards, extra electronics, psu's, etc, etc.. all to 'replace' one laser-head... so, again... *sigh*.. maybe someday, we'll come-across some 'amazing firesale' on OPSLs from some Co that went belly-up, etc.. til then...

Suppose it would be worth a 'test bed' with an OPSL RYGB-engine, and several line-matched waveplates in XYZ-mounts, so see what kind of 'efficiency' we could manage thru a PCAOM.. but thats still ~$60K+ of lasers, to *maybe* be able to replace an Ion WL... and I'm still losing all the other lines - that *do* make a 'difference', in some of the most luscious optical-fx (..fiber-turret fx, machita, etc) - to-have. 'Cyans' and extra greens and blues matter... imho...
...you wanna let me 'borrow yer CC'?jk..

Jon,
I'll purchase some lotto tickets for tonight. Cross your fingers & I'll get back to you.

Hah! Well, I'll publically-pledge a very-respectable 'ROI'..I know, for a fact, we could bag a major venue, in SF, (..if I could 'go all s.s', while maintaining the quality-experience...) like, yesterday...
They do ~2500 peeps thru the door every other Thurs nite, w/O a 39-year-famous laser-show, there, and Laserium shows are not reknowned for 'killing attendance'

These folks seem to have some interesting LDs..
