Default How to kill someone with a laser?

So our professor asked us (a bunch of physics students) to hand in an assignment asap (we got three days left) because we were already late and the grades add toward our final exam score. But only he forgot to put the assignment online and he neglected to warn us that there even was an assignment. The exam period starts within two weeks and everyone is busy preparing for other courses. He insists that we make the assignment nonetheless.

So I started thinking... would a Laserscope be powerful enough? It doesn't need to be clean. Maybe with good focussing we could have some decent results. Any thoughts?

Not unless you could knock the guy out first so he didn't move. It'd be much easier to just electrocute him with the power supply - does that count?

Of course, but that would be too quick and painless...

It appears that he did actually not forget to put the assignment online, but he just can't figure out how to do it! Strange how those people are able to understand quantum mechanics, Gaussian integrals, statistican thermodynamics and Labview, but simply have no clue how their own digital environment works.

Well he got lucky, the assignment was (righteously!) cancelled, only now the part of the exam that handles the subject counts double... so now we are going to lose our points anyway because we never really could study the subject! LOL

I am not sure about the laser beam itself how ever blofeld was going to try it on james bond in Gold Finger but james talked his way out of it. If you go the thread above its very Greeeeen take a look at my reply I think the power supply of a SP 171 has the potential to do this pretty easy if you pushed said person into it with the service panel removed the result would most likely be cremation long as the breaker held.

Seriously. I was talking about this the other day. I manage a conference center and with day meetings, some of the speakers I encounter may be uber knowledgeable about their particular subject, but they're too damn stupid to figure out how to open a sugar packet for their coffee. When you deal with the public as much as I do, it's rather scary at just how stupid society as a whole is becoming.

You could kill someone with a laserscope...

    Drop it on him.

What, cancelled the assignment? Sissies! Girly-men afraid to even discuss the many disciplines of the technology. I am going to vomit at the political correctness and the pablum-spewing hypocrites who proclaim their 'sensitivity'.

It's 2012 and yes, there is a boogieman. Its name is "knowledge".

Here is how you kill someone with a laser, any where, any time. It's in storage presently.

Megawatt-class oxygen iodine laser, a tracking beam, sensing beam and adaptive optics (deformable reflector making 1Kcorrentions/second/actuator) to correct atmospheric distortions and do the time on target thing with a beautiful beam profile, many many miles away.

Your assignment is to view and download all the youtube, archive.org, and other videos and materials, and study them. Then write a 1000 word report and post it here in defiance of academia.
Extra credit if you own a copy of the book, "Airborne Laser: Bullets of Light" by Robert W. Duffner, chronicling the early development of the concept resulting in a KC-135 with a gasdynamic laser, and can include an analysis of the first system's faults. Super extra credit if you can name the socialist who cancelled the program shown in the photos and quote the statement promising to do so.

    recommended research materials:

It is the will of Landru.

Whack um upside the back of the neck with a long 27 mW JDSU HENE? Breaking the tube in the process? Only thing I can think of is blast the carotid arteries or jugular vein, but I know zip about anatomy.... Somehow get them to open up long enough to burn the back of the throat, causing airway closure from swelling? Secondary reaction from being blinded? Got Kilowatts?

I'd have a better chance killing some one quickly with a "D" battery.

Bonus points if you walked through the plane with the gas dynamic laser when the Air Force had it rusting in the rain at the National Museum of the US Air Force. It was shall we say unique inside, with lots of open beam paths. Latest rumored news is the AF wants to scrap the NKC-135 at the museum from lack of funding.
