Default Can anyone bring a chiller to Surfleet?

    Hi,

As a few of you know I recently purchased a used 50Wish YAG, ex of Starlight Express. Well I picked it up and everything looks really great. But as YAGs are not really my thing, I"m more of an old large frame gas guy, I plan on bringing it to Surfleet so we can all have a play and hopefully get it running. Problem is the only item missing is the chiller. Does anyone have one they could bring to the meet, or indeed a spare one they would like to sell?

    This is the device http://www.photonmanufacturing.com/Products.html

Its an older version, but I think the YAG part is the same. Any help would really be appreciated and would give us another toy to play with at the end of the month.

    Many thanks

    Steve

    Hi Steve

Sorry, can't help with the chiller...

    Has it arrived yet?

Chiller or not, you just *have* to bring it to Surfleet

    Cheers

    Hi Jem,

Yes I picked it up on Friday, just couldn't wait and had to be in London some time in the next few weeks for business anyway. It will still come with me it's just without the chiller it will be like a museum piece I will need a chiller anyway and so hopefully someone will know where I can source one cheaply.

    Cheers

Why not just hook it up to the cold water in feed with an inline DI filter and take the output to drain?
It doesn't have to be closed loop does it?

I am not sure it needs to be closed loop or not. But I contacted the manufacturer in the US, who have been really helpful, and they said it needed to be distilled and demonised water of a particular spec otherwise l would damage the head. As I am new to YAGs I am not sure why this is. We used to run the ion lasers from water buts with big tanks at festivals etc and I never really worried about anything more than a particle filter or 2 to get rid of the larger deposits. Can you get filters which take normal water and filter to DI standards, but can still provide the flow rate etc?

    Any advice gratefully received

    Cheers

Send a PM to Steve (MixedGas) here on PL, or he might pick up this thread. Another possibility is Jon at Daystar Lasers (DSLI_Jon) or Pat (Laserman532). I'm sure any of these people will know something about these units and tell you why it specifically needs a chiller.

    Cheers

    Hi,

I have an inline cooling pump and radiator, also quite a few cooling parts and cooling bits to work off a cold water feed. Cant see why you would put a DI filter in a non closed loop cooling system though?
You will need to establish if it is inline cooling or not you require. If its inline make sure to pick up a gallon of DI water from a car accessory shop! Also a clean DI filter from a supplier.
I am thinking of coming to surfleet for the first time, though haven't fully decided yet. If i do happy to bring anything that you can use for a cooling system.

    Steve,
In a standard arc lamp/ Flash lamp pumped Yag laser. The Arc lamp actually has water running over it. De-ionised water does not conduct electricity and therefore ther is no chance of a short circuit through the cooling water. Normal water does conduct and would have disasterous consequences in a yag laser. One type of cooler, the deionised water is pumped through a stainless steel radiator with a fan to cool it. This is an inline cooling system. However sometimes a heat exchanger is used there is still deionised water flowing round the flash lamp except this time the deionised water is passed through a heat exchanger instead of a radiator and fresh water is used to cool, down the heat exchanger instead of a fan.
    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Steve
